Enter Aragon DAOism

By Vladan Lausevic | CryptoVlad | 5 Jan 2023

The Aragon Network (Aragon) was created in 2016 as an open-source and decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) based on Ethereum (ETH) blockchain. The main goal is to make it easy to create DAOs and promote "digital jurisdiction" for organizations, entrepreneurs, and investors to do business without to much bureaucracy and complications.

Aragon enables all the functionalities necessary to maintain and create DAOs, including an incentive model for contributors, raise funds, and join the community. The network allows anyone to create and host decentralized applications on the Aragon network. At the same time, creators can make a profit based on the use of their applications. To make a DAO, developers first need to use AragonOS, which is a smart contract framework with built-in features for decentralized organizations.

Aragon is managed by the Aragon association as a non-profit organization by using funds collected through token sales based on ANT cryptocurrency. In 201, Aragon had its ICO raising 275,000 ETH (around $25 million) at a rate of 100 ANT per ETH. ANT is also used for community governance, voting, and proposals such as regarding legislation upgrades, smart contract upgrades or change.

Aragon-based DAOs can also have direct interactions through the use of the Aragon Agent application and Ethereum smart contracts. For example, Aragon Client is used for DAO creation and community management. In contrast, Aragon Court is used as a "court" for online dispute resolution and conflict management. The broader Aragon network also has several service protocols, each with its own set of smart contracts.

One of the main purposes of the Aragon Court is to solve subjective disputes that smart contracts cannot solve. The court is based on a truth-seeking reward method called "Schelling game" where "judges" are asked to vote on the ruling they think their fellow jurors are more likely to vote on. Judges that vote with the consensus ruling are rewarded with ruling fees and juror tokens from the jurors that voted for a minority ruling.

Aragon network is secured through decentralization and a predetermined set of rules that are based on automation of the consensus mechanism. Aragon also has several affiliated organizations such as Aragon Association and Aragon One based in Zug, Switzerland.
