Bridges. Thanks to our time here, many of us have had first hand experience making use of Orbiter Finance. It’s great for swapping assets on one blockchain to another. Its fast speed and low fees are other advantages.
However, on the flip side, bridges are susceptible to hacks. A Chainalysis article last year reported that $2 billion dollars were hacked or stolen from bridges. By their very nature, bridges facilitate interdependences between chains, which is akin to increasing the points of contact for hackers to exploit.
So when we think about interoperable blockchains like Cosmos and Polkadot, this flaw of bridges comes to mind. Cosmos comprises an Inter-Blockchain Communication (IBC) protocol that enables data and tokens to be shared across multiple blockchains. Polkadot uses parachains to accomplish likewise.
All this sounds very promising but to what extent do you think Cosmos and Polkadot will fulfill their intended purposes? After all, when developers invent another blockchain, isn’t the onus on Cosmos and Polkadot personnel to explore how to build bridges between this new blockchain and all other existing blockchains?
