Major Changes to Sunflower Land's Economy

With so many projects and games in the crypto space shutting down, survivors are having to reinvent themselves and rethink the costs of staying afloat; consequently, changes and updates are necessary—and already underway—to ensure project survival. While the focus here is on the changes and updates occurring in Sunflower Land, it is worth noting that this trend affects projects across the board.

To provide some context regarding other games and projects that have recently undergone similar shifts: Axie Infinity changed its AXS token rewards to bAXS, introducing a withdrawal fee for players wishing to cash out—with the fee increasing as in-game activity decreases. Projects like Splinterlands are also reviewing the costs required to keep the game running. Beyond just games, major players in the crypto market are making adjustments; for instance, the Ethereum Foundation—a key supporter of the Ethereum ecosystem—implemented a 40% budget cut and laid off 20% of its staff.

In the specific case of Sunflower Land, the team is raising the minimum withdrawal requirements to a level far beyond the reach of most players. While many of these changes make sense when considering the economic sustainability of this NFT game, the manner in which they are implemented is open to question...

Major Changes to the Sunflower Land Economy

The first change is that the "Grand Harvester" rank will now require 1,000 points. At first glance, this might seem insignificant since there was previously no benefit to holding that rank, but the second change explains why this will completely transform Sunflower Land. Now, Flower token withdrawals can only be made by players with the Grand Harvester rank—rather than the Grower rank. This effectively makes it impossible for the majority of players to continue withdrawing from the game—a move similar to Axie's implementation of an extremely high withdrawal fee. Do you see how these changes are interconnected?

Let's look at the internal context within Sunflower Land that drove this decision and understand the scale of the impact. To earn the required 1,000 points, players must either unlock level 100 or reach the Volcano Island—essentially, those are the two options. For players in the Desert biome who have reached level 100, there will be an additional 2.5% marketplace sales fee if they have VIP status. This follows a 5% fee increase for players in the Basic, Spring, and Desert biomes, while the Volcano biome remains unaffected.

The issue is that only a minority of players are in the Volcano biome—accounting for around 2,000 active accounts—whereas the other biomes comprise over 30,000 active accounts that have been directly affected by the fee increase.

Furthermore, regarding player levels, the vast majority are concentrated below level 50—a figure that likely includes players who have stopped playing. There is still a significant number of players between levels 50 and 76, but from level 73 onwards, there is a sharp drop-off: the count falls from 900 at level 50 to 212 at level 77. Beyond that point, only a few dozen players remain. From level 140 upwards, the player count drops to just a handful. This clearly indicates a lack of incentives for players to advance in level and expand their farms.

A quick final note—while not the main focus here, it is important—is that the upcoming chapter will introduce the "Ascension" mechanic, which is set to stir up activity among the game's "whales" once again. These players typically compete in the season's major NFT auctions; they complete all tasks to accumulate a specific number of tickets and then choose the items they want. Now that everyone starts at the same level, Ascension progress will be a key differentiator in determining who gets priority in the bidding process, even if multiple players offer the same amount.

Given this, it is highly likely that the current change regarding reputation—which wouldn't affect the game's most advanced players at all—will stir up intermediate players currently in the Desert, creating a two-pronged shift. On one hand, we’ll see "whales" pushing ahead with ascensions; on the other, intermediate players will be striving to reach level 100 and/or unlock the Volcano expansion.

However, there are some flaws in this logic: players might refuse to advance and instead seek a new cost-benefit sweet spot—for instance, by accepting the extra 2.5% fee and staying in the Desert while simply aiming for level 100. As for high-level players, if few people move beyond the Desert, they might not need to take action, as they could still secure good NFTs in the auctions. Now, we just have to wait and see if the distribution of islands between the Desert and the Volcano shifts over time.
