How to Take Advantage of Low DEC Prices

The crypto market as a whole is going through what could be considered a bear market, with many altcoins dropping 60%, 80%, or even 90%, and projects losing users and revenue—or even shutting down entirely. A curious aspect of this scenario is that, although Bitcoin's value is currently half of its $125k all-time high (ATH), its current price of $60k actually represents the peak of the previous bull run—a fact worth remembering.

It is common knowledge that the prices of other tokens are influenced by Bitcoin, as it drives liquidity and distributes it to the rest of the ecosystem. In the current climate—characterized by capital flowing into AI, concerns regarding quantum computing, and global economic uncertainty—Bitcoin's price has taken a significant hit. Consequently, secondary tokens and assets from projects like NFT games bear the brunt of this uncertainty, as users withdraw their funds to avoid risk.

This uncertainty surrounding technological advancements, combined with the drop in BTC's price, has caused the DEC token from the NFT card game Splinterlands to fall significantly in recent months. The token—which was theoretically intended to trade at a ratio of $1 to 1,000 DEC—is now worth less than a quarter of that value, trading at approximately $0.00023 per unit.

However, even amidst this downturn, there are interesting opportunities to consider given the low price of DEC. In Splinterlands, some items are still traded based on a 1:1000 ratio—or even at rates exceeding the token's current market value—giving players an added advantage when they choose to spend the token in-game rather than simply selling it on the market. It is precisely these advantages that we are going to examine!

How to Take Advantage of Low DEC Prices - Wild Pass

People often talk about "buying the dip"—saying it's the best time to buy—but when the market actually enters a slump, that sentiment seems to vanish because everyone is focused on selling as quickly as possible. However, not everyone thinks that way; the idea for this post came from a video by aftersound, who discussed a strategy for capitalizing on the current low price of the DEC token.

The strategy involves pre-purchasing Wild Passes. For those unfamiliar, playing in Splinterlands' Wild mode requires purchasing a pass that costs 2,000 DEC. If DEC were valued at a 1:1000 ratio (1 DEC = $0.001), the pass would cost $2 to participate in the 15-day season. However, at the current DEC price, the pass costs less than a quarter of that amount—meaning it costs under $0.50 to participate in the Wild season.

One advantage of buying DEC at this price point is that you effectively "lock in" the cost of the pass at a maximum of $0.45. Of course, the token's value could continue to drop, but in that scenario, you would pay even less for the pass—which would be even better for a Wild Format player. By locking in the cost at $0.45, you avoid the worst-case scenario of paying more for the pass later. Essentially, for the price of a single $2 pass, you are currently buying enough DEC for four future passes.

How to Take Advantage of Low DEC Prices - Token Speculation

Another advantage—though not exclusive to DEC, but applicable to any token you believe might rise in value—relates to speculation: specifically, buying DEC at a price below its $1:1000 peg.

The difference compared to other tokens is that you don't necessarily need to convert back to dollars later, as various items within the Splinterlands ecosystem accept DEC as a form of payment or a required resource.

One primary use for DEC is buying and selling marketplace items, such as cards. Take the "Kaylia Silverleaf" card, for example; it currently costs 3,756 DEC. Since the DEC price is calculated based on the dollar value, if the token's price rises, fewer DEC tokens will be required, effectively lowering the cost of acquiring that card.

There are also other ways to utilize DEC while its value is low, though I lack sufficient experience with them to fully understand the specific risks or the step-by-step mechanics involved. One potential use case is the DEC/SPS liquidity pool recently introduced to the game; however, as far as I know, it carries the risk of impermanent loss. Additionally, the Splinterlands pool charges a steep 10% fee if you withdraw funds before 30 days—a measure designed to discourage withdrawals and maintain token stability.

Finally, there is the option to activate Land. Since I don't own any Land myself, I’m not entirely familiar with the mechanics, but I understand that activating all Land slots requires 50k tokens, and you can withdraw the tokens at any time.

Before considering any of these options, it is wise to analyze the situation carefully and gather more information before making a decision. One important point regarding Land is that it is a low-liquidity market with limited trading volume—only $427 over the last 24 hours—and there are various additional costs involved in fully maximizing the Land's potential.
