Why Can't Richard Heart Understand NFTs?

By Hamminy | cryptoinvesting | 20 Mar 2021

I find it weird that someone who prides himself on being so counterculture has trouble recognizing the value of the NFT movement. This is coming from a person who has decided to sit out the majority of the NFT movement. Why? Because it's not my bag from an investment standpoint. I'd personally go broke if I tried to make money in NFT art.

But that doesn't mean I don't recognize why it is important. If anything, the fact that I'm not incentivized to my viewpoint economically should validate it more substantially.

So Heart had one of his Youtube rants with a sycophant yes man (that's another fuckin post entirely) shitting on the entire NFT space because it didn't conform to the traditional notion of property rights. He had the same argument that most people have about NFTs — if you can't enforce the rights on a piece of work, then you aren't really buying anything except a jpeg.

The final arbiter of these property rights he speaks of is government. Because you can't call up thugs to threaten someone who allegedly offends your IP, the entire work is worthless. It can be copied, so it has no value.

He says this while Hex is on the blockchain.

Hey, you arrogant prick — how can you claim to be this rebel while negotiating the value of an entire movement by its proximity to government? He says this even as he talks about getting rid of government middlemen and tries to obfuscate his physical location from government. The blockchain is the new government. Smart contracts remove the need for government from the IP argument.

But Alucard, if you don't have government, you don't have enforcement! Anyone can copy anything, like Binance Punks with Cryptopunks!

You are kidding me right? Crypto is an open source culture. You gain value from adoption and continued improvement on an idea. Uniswap has a fork on every single major chain. Uniswap maintains its value because of its proximity to value, talks of protocol improvements, and most importantly, its immutability on the Ethereum blockchain. Not the corruptible police or the arbitrary, quite malleable and corruptible law.

It was so funny — Heart was bragging on this $100,000 Patek watch that he had while encouraging the sycophant to buy a much more shiny but much less expensive Rolex. Why? Because the Rolex has name value to the proletariat. The Patek isn't full of diamonds and shit and less laypersons know the brand. It was really silly how Heart couldn't see the parallel between what he was saying about the watch and why NFTs don't need traditional IP to thrive. I'll lay it out for you in case your ass is slow.

Heart was advising his yesman to buy Rolex because it's easier to get respect in the everyday world with a Rolex that has shiny diamonds. Those diamonds and the Rolex name are wealth signals that have been widely proliferated. But. There is a higher level of wealth, for those who are really in the know. That's why the Patek with no precious metals costs 10x the Rolex full of diamonds. If you walk among these elite, then you will be recognized. What's more, if you walk around with the gaudy Rolex, you will never reach these elite, because they will recognize you as a wannabe pleb.

Government-recognized IP is, in this case, the diamond encrusted Rolex. Everyone understands a court case for copying an IP. Not everyone understands an open source culture where IP is held by adoption and innovation. That's the Patek. But the Patek is worth way more. And this is not an opinion to argue. This is a FACT until Cryptopunks sell for less than Binancepunks. The few who understand why will have advantages and opportunities in crypto that the majority of new users will never be able to even find out about.

So what does this mean for your money?

For political and economic reasons, you should do your best to recognize the new form of IP — one that does not require government to enforce. If you give power back to government in this important point, then any gains you make in crypto will eventually mean nothing. That government will eventually usurp all of the nominal gains you may have enjoyed into their black hole of anti-adoption and anti-innovation. If you don't get it now, don't worry. Just stay in the space. You will.
