Vitalik Buterin wants end of 'Anonymous Society' in Crypto

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at recent comments by Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, where he outlines his views on how the 'Anonymous Society' in cryptocurrency does not work.

End of 'Anonymous Society' in Crypto

Vitalik Buterin recently gave his opinion on social media platform 'X' where he expressed his scepticism towards the effectiveness of an 'anonymous society' or even a 'financialized pseudonymous society.' The Ethereum co-founder noted his opinion on the necessity of a more multidimensional identity concept, characterized by 'soulbound' features. He argued that without making use of such a concept then the most stable governance structures would inevitably become de facto centralised, while others would be vulnerable to attacks from financialized governance. A prime example of this is the issues which hamper today's DAOs (Decentralized Autonomous Organizations).

Buterin went on to describe the anonymity as a counterbalance designed to manage the 'dark side of the cycle.' He also noted this is insufficient to operate the entire cycle, while likening it to the impossibility of running a society solely on perpetual rebellious energy. When noting the topic of existential risk, Buterin noted that diverse thinking could help identify effective mitigation measures that people can support.

Another user commented on the requirement for a dual or multiple identity concept, rather than a binary framing. In an ideal scenario there would be switching between identities within a single wallet. While Buterin agreed, he also advocated for granular control over disclosure levels and minimal feasible disclosure for each application. Buterin also noted that zk (zero-knowledge) applications are already being designed with these principles in mind.

This would be the more sophisticated and multidimensional notion of identity that Buterin has called for, while he also mentioned the misuse of governance actions and how these cannot be inferred solely by observing the actions themselves. He drew a parallel with culture, stating that cultural behaviours in these aspects are similar to governance.
