Good day everyone,
I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the recent conviction of a man from Virginia for helping to fund ISIS with crypto.
Man Convicted for Funding ISIS
A 35-year-old man from Springfield, Virginia, was recently convicted by a federal jury for making a number of cryptocurrency donations to the terrorist organisation, the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS). Mohammed Azharuddin Chhipa sent $185,000 worth of cryptocurrencies to ISIS members in Syria between October 2019 and October 2022, according to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ).
Chhipa was convicted last week after, according to court records, he used social media accounts to raise funds before converting them in cryptocurrency. He then transferred the crypto to Turkey so that it could be smuggled to ISIS members in Syria. He had been collecting and sending the money to female ISIS members in Syria as they looked for financial help to escape prison camps. He also supported ISIS fighters with his crypto smuggling efforts.
The DOJ confirmed that Chhipa worked closely with a British-born ISIS member who resides in Syria. He was the primary co-conspirator and he was a key component in facilitating the movement of funds and coordinating efforts to finance prison escapes and terrorist attacks.
Chhipa was convicted on five counts - one count of conspiracy to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization and four counts of providing and attempting to provide material support or resources to a designated foreign terrorist organization. His sentencing has been scheduled for 5th of May 2025 as he faces a maximum of 20 years in prison per count, meaning he could get a sentence of 100 years. However, generally the sentences for federal crimes are typically less than the maximum penalties.
Have a great day.
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
