SBF Put into Solitary Following Interview

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all having a good day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. In this post I will be looking at the news of Sam Bankman-Fried being placed in solitary confinement following an unauthorised interview with Tucker Carlson.

SBF Put into Solitary Following Interview

Former FTX CEO Sam “SBF” Bankman-Fried was reportedly put into solitary confinement after he gave an unauthorised interview with Tucker Carlson while in prison. Currently in Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center, where SBF has been held for the last 18 months, SBF appeared in a video call interview with the former Fox News host as he made his latest attempt for an apparent appeal to receive a presidential pardon for his 25-year sentence for fraud and conspiracy which include stealing more than $8 Billion from customers at his crypto exchange FTX.

On March 7th a representative for the Bureau of Prisons confirmed “this particular interview was not approved” and in general communications in federal prisons are heavily regulated. As soon as the interview was published on Carlson's YouTube channel on the 6th of March, the 33-year-old was taken away and placed in solitary. As part of the interview SBF discussed prison life while he also told Carlson he didn’t think he was “a criminal.” The interview has 867,000 views at the time of writing.

Interestingly, federal prosecutors showed a 19-point plan created by SBF to revive his public image at the time of FTX going bankrupt. Among them it noted  “Go on Tucker Carlsen, come out as a republican.” Part of that bullet was also, “Come out against the woke agenda.”

During the interview with Carlson the focus was on prison life and the belief by SBF that he is innocent. SBF noted how back in 2020 he had been center-left when he donated to the Biden campaign, giving the rationale that he believed Biden would be a "center-left president.” SBF followed that up by stating he was shocked by what he witnessed from DC following the election of Biden and that it was not a good direction. SBF has also recently praised Elon Musk, advisor to President Trump and head of the new Department of Government Efficiency, while stating the “Republican party was far more reasonable” in an interview with the New York Times.

SBF also gave his thoughts on the direction of cryptocurrency regulations in the United States as he praised the Republicans. While Carlson did not directly ask Bankman-Fried if he expected a presidential pardon, he appeared receptive to some Republican ideas as part of the discussion. Ever since the interview aired there has been a growing belief and speculation that SBF may be given a pardon by Trump.

So far no indication has been given that SBF's parents, both of whom are Stanford University Law Professors and have been advocating on his behalf, have made any contact with Trump or his advisors. The White House has not commented on the case and no official pardon request has been submitted. According to crypto predictions platform Polymarket, “the odds of an SBF pardon have nearly doubled” since the interview was published.

As part of the interview SBF also talked about life in prison. He mentioned living with “alleged ex-gangsters” and high-profile cellmates like Sean “Diddy” Combs. Regarding Combs, SBF stated “he’s been kind to me. It’s a position no one wants to be in. Obviously he doesn’t, I don’t. It’s kind of a soul crushing place."

Bankman-Fried's legal team continue to fight for his freedom and back in September 2024 they filed an appeal against his 25-year prison sentence and seven felony convictions. Within the 102 page appeal they argue he was “never presumed innocent,” citing media coverage and prosecutorial bias as factors that unfairly influenced his case.

A group of doctors have also submitted an amicus brief in support of SBF's appeal where they claim his criminal trial may have been significantly affected by his neurodivergence disorders. SBF has been diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), therefore he faced “serious challenges” during the court proceedings. This brief was signed by eight doctors specialising in neurodivergence.

The brief noted that several rulings during the trial were detrimental to Bankman-Fried due to his conditions. It also concluded with another filing by a group of bankruptcy law professors who expressed concerns about the intersection of FTX’s bankruptcy case and Bankman-Fried’s criminal trial. Te professors argued that the cooperation between the FTX bankruptcy estate and the prosecution could set a “dangerous precedent,” encouraging the use of Chapter 11 proceedings to bolster parallel criminal prosecutions.
