r/cryptocurrency and Unstoppable Domains
The reddit group r/cryptocurrency has teamed up with Unstoppable Domains to launch .MOON, the first Reddit community-based blockchain domain. The subreddit currently contains around 8.8 million users and the new domain will be built on the Polygon blockchain. It will allow users of the community to establish digital identities and interact with over 865 blockchain applications and wallets. John Murphy, Treasurer of MOON DAO, stated:
“We at r/cryptocurrency have always been focused on community empowerment, and launching .MOON domains is the next big step in that journey.”
The .MOON domain enables users to send and receive crypto assets and NFTs while creating unique digital profiles. It also integrates with Unstoppable Domains’ ecosystem and this will provide access to decentralized apps and exclusive collectible badges. The Chief Operating Officer at Unstoppable Domains, Sandy Carter, stated that the company is dedicated to integrating diverse projects into its ecosystem.
She went on to highlight that he r/cryptocurrency community is capable of extending its uniquie position and energy into the onchain space through moving beyond Reddit and reaching new users via decentralized applications.
While Reddit has stepped back from the crypto space, the r/cryptocurrency community continues to drive innovation. When Reddit ended their control of the Moon's smart contract, the community was quick to take over and continue the project. With the .MOON domain launch, crypto initiatives now stem from the community rather than Reddit itself.
The collaboration is “a major step forward in bridging a popular community from one of the world’s largest social platforms with the Web3 ecosystem” according to the press release. So far the community contains 9 million members and more than 217,000 token holders. A part of the Moons project allows companies to advertise on r/cryptocurrency by burning moons. It recorded more than 50 advertisers and 2.6 million MOONS burned.
