Hong Kong Privacy Fears with WorldCoin
The much criticised project by OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, WorldCoin, is being probed in Hong Kong due to privacy concerns. Tocal media outlet HKET reported that the data protection authority of Hong Kong has investigated six Worldcoin booths on Wednesday the 31st of January 2024 via a court warrant. They revealed that the operators were also requested to share relevant documents and information.
The Privacy Commissioner’s Office noted significant concerns about personal data privacy with WorldCoin and noted they could be potentially in breach of data laws. The office also reportedly launched an inquiry into the project as their concerns centre around the privacy of individuals’ data.
The Commissioner of the office, Chung Liling, cautioned the public against being too casual when participating in iris scanning activities. WorldCoin has been operational in Hong Kong since July 2023 and has already attracted a large number of participants.
So far the projects cryptocurrency wallet, known as World App, has seen over 1 million active users and over 4 million downloads within just six months of its release. Altman founded Worldcoin with the vision of implementing a universal basic income (UBI) system and the idea is that people will receive recurring crypto grants as a guaranteed source of income.
The project makes use of its iris scanning technology, known as the 'Orb', and by scanning someones eyes it can ensure each crypto grant goes to a different person. These scans are performed by the operators responsible for the Orbs and are also used to confirm people's identities. Once scanned, each person will have a distinct digital wallet for Worldcoin which will in turn help to prevent fraud. The overall goal is to promote financial equality and make digital assets accessible to all, although their method of collecting biometric data has caused privacy concerns globally.
The project is under scrutiny in other areas besides just Hong Kong, with regulators worldwide concerned with the way the company manages its biometric data. Germany, France, and Britain have all indicated intentions to investigate the project, while Kenya has been extremely vocal its in concerns over the project. In December 2023 WorldCoin was forced to pause its orb verification service in India, Brazil, and France.
