Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. Today I will be looking at the recent news of Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao, the former chief executive of Binance, being sentenced to four months in prison by a Seattle court.
Changpeng ‘CZ’ Zhao
Judge Richard Jones of the Seattle court decided on Tuesday, the 30th of April 2024, that Changpeng Zhao was to be sentenced to four months in prison. This followed CZ pleading guilty to violating U.S. laws against money laundering while working at the world's largest cryptocurrency exchange.
Back at his time in charge of Binance CZ was considered one of the most powerful people in the cryptocurrency industry. Following on from the sentencing of Sam Bankman-Fried back in March, this now makes it two prominent major crypto bosses who have been put behind bars. Prosecutors had looked for a three year sentence, but U.S. District Judge Richard Jones decided to go with a sentence below the maximum 1-1/2 years recommended under federal guidelines.
Judge Richard Jones considered several mitigating factors during the sentencing which included how Zhao cooperated with law enforcement along the way, while also noting the numerous character references submitted to the court. The Judge made it clear he felt Zhao was unlikely to re-offend when setting the sentence.
Prosecutors were pleased with the outcome, cheering after their years-long investigation into Binance and Zhao. The prosecutors had asserted that under Zhao’s leadership Binance had acted as a hub for illicit financial activities, which included transactions linked to extremist groups and individuals involved in child sexual abuse material. They claimed Binance had employed a "Wild West" model that welcomed criminals, and did not report more than 100,000 suspicious transactions. U.S. Attorney Tessa Gorman noted outside the courthouse:
"This was an epic day. Incarceration was critical in this case and we’re pleased with the result.”
Binance had previously agreed to pay a $4.32 billion penalty while Zhao paid a $50 million criminal fine plus $50 million to the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission. Before the sentence Zhao, who wore a navy blue suit and tie in the courtroom, noted to the judge:
"I'm sorry. I believe the first step of taking responsibility is to fully recognize the mistakes. Here I failed to implement an adequate anti-money laundering program ... I realize now the seriousness of that mistake."
Zhao’s defence team had argued probation, noting their client's remorse and acceptance of responsibility. Zhao had previously stepped down from his role at the exchange he founded back in 2017, He will surrender voluntarily to serve his sentence, which will most likely be served at a detention centre near Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. With Richard Teng as the new CEO at Binance, the company will look to move forward into the complexities of the post-Zhao era.
