Good day everybody,
Welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things crypto. Today I will be looking at the latest major release of the Bitcoin Core software, version 26.0, which is now available. The new upgrade includes a number of changes which will improve network connectivity and syncing speed for nodes. The Bitcoin developers have noted that the next upgrade, which will be v27.0, may put an end to the controversial Bitcoin Ordinals.
Bitcoin Core v26.0
The official release of Bitcoin Core v26.0 has taken place, with the update adding experimental support for the v2 transport protocol defined in Bitcoin Improvement Proposal 324 (BIP324). Bitcoin Core is the primary open-source software which connects the blockchain behind the world's largest cryptocurrency.
The official release has added nodes with multiple reachable networks which will work to establish at least one outbound connection in each network. This is supposed to improve the node’s individual resistance to partition attacks and the network-level resistance to partition attacks. Users will no longer need to take their own proactive measures to ensure connectivity to multiple enabled networks. Alongside that there are a variety of RPC (Remote Procedure Calls) enhancements, including those related to wallets and changes to Bitcoin's graphical user interface (GUI).
The new version also adds "loadtxoutset", which allows loading UTXO snapshots in the "dumptxoutset" generated format, meaning it can bootstrap a node in minutes instead of hours. This can allow nodes to come online instantly instead of waiting for full sync.
According to the proposal:
"This proposal for a new P2P protocol version (v2) aims to improve upon this by raising the costs for performing these attacks substantially, primarily through the use of unauthenticated, opportunistic transport encryption. A key benefit is that encryption, even when it is unauthenticated and only used when both endpoints support v2, impedes eavesdropping by forcing the attacker to become active."
The existing default legacy protocol is still fully supported., and while the existing V1 transport protocol remains supported users are required to enable V2 in order to make use of it.
Bitcoin developers have also made an indication that the next release, v27, may put an end to the controversial Bitcoin Ordinals. The Bitcoin Ordinals are satoshis (the smallest unit of Bitcoin) that have been digitally inscribed with text or an image to make them unique collectibles. This in essence has turned them into a form of Bitcoin-based NFTs.
Introduced back in January 2023 by Casey Rodarmor, they have been considered controversial due to aggregating large amounts of data on the Bitcoin blockchain. The blockchain was intended for financial transactions which is why many have been conflicted by the Bitcoin Ordinals.
The recent update to Bitcoin Core v26.0 has not addressed the ongoing issues with Bitcoin Ordinals directly, but developers have noted that they may be tackled in the next major release, v27. This will include changes that disable critical functionality needed for new Ordinals to be created.
The founder of OCEAN mining pool and Bitcoin Core contributor, Luke Dashjr, had noted that the method used for making Ordinals takes advantage of a vulnerability, although that was recently patched in the Bitcoin Core fork Bitcoin Knots. He explained that the vulnerability allowed Ordinals to bypass the code’s limits on extra data in transactions, and this was done by obfuscating inscription data as program code.
Dashjr was always known to be a vocal critic of Ordinals since they were introduced, and he stated they are merely a form of spam on the blockchain. He also noted how they cause damage to the network, and the recent resurgence in Ordinal activity has congested the network. This drives up the average transaction fee on the Bitcoin network by more than 1000%.
Bitcoin
The pending update in Bitcoin Core v27 which fixes this vulnerability to prevent new Ordinals from being minted although any existing Ordinals would remain on the blockchain. The v26 and v27 updates seek to strike that balance with minimal disruption to users of Bitcoin for payments, trading, and investment.
Have a great day.
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
