As a lot of us are likely well aware of by now, Artificial Intelligence is on the rise and becoming the buzz word of 2023. Today I am going to begin a mini series looking at different websites known for their use of AI and how anybody can make use of them to create text images, which can potentially be used to sell as NFTs. Today I will be looking at DALL-E by OpenAI.
What is DALL-E
DALL-E is an AI system which was developed by OpenAI and it has the ability to create original, realistic images and art from a short text description. The AI has the capability of making realistic and context-aware edits, including inserting, removing, or retouching specific sections of an image from a natural language description. It can also take an image and make novel and creative variations of it inspired by the original.
DALL-E was trained to understand these skills by learning the relationship between images and the text used to describe them. This is a process known as diffusion, and it involves a pattern of random dots and gradually altering that pattern towards a final output.
It is open and usable by anybody, and the more DALL-E creates the more it can learn. The team at OpenAI are committed to safety and therefore their content policy prohibits the use of DALL·E to create deceptive content. They also ensured to use advanced techniques during training to prevent photorealistic generations of real individuals’ faces. harmful or images of illegal things are also filtered out through the system to guarantee there is no inappropriate use of the system, and is monitored by computers and humans.
How to use DALL-E
The first thing to do with DALL-E is sign up, using an email and phone number. If you have read my previous post on ChatGPT it is the same organisation so if you have logged into that then it will be the same log in.
DALL-E works off a credit basis system to create the AI images, with new users being given 50 credits when they sign up. From there, its a matter of using your imagination on how to spend your credits. Every month users are given an additional 15 free credits, but beware as these credits don't roll over and will expire at the end of the month. Users also have the option on purchasing additional credits, and the paid credits expire 12 months from the date of purchase. Every action on the site costs a DALL-E credit, to to create an image will cost a credit. This means you basically get 15 free chances to create in a month.
To create an image, a user simply types what they want into the command bar. There are a number of examples given, and being more specific, including things like what style you want, is very important to generating the image you desire. For example, the two images below show different variations depending on the original input, and each gives a different feel and level of quality to the final image.
The first had an input of: “stained glass window of bitcoin, digital art”
The second had an input of: “3D render of a stained glass window about bitcoin, digital art”
Finally, you can also make variations from a generated image by clicking generate variations. The image below is a variation of the original “stained glass window of bitcoin, digital art”
Each image is unique in its output, and these were just a couple of basic things I messed around with. The quality will vary depending on the request, but generally if you are specific you will get better results. Below is a collage of a couple of different images I played around with and created.
Finally, and possibly the best part of DALL-E, is that every image created is entirely yours to keep and use as you please. The image rights are yours regardless of whether you made it from a paid or free credit. This includes the rights to reprint, sell, and merchandise the images.
Conclusion
DALL_E is a must see for anybody interested in creating digital art, whether that be for NFTs or just for fun. It can be used to generate an inspiration from your ideas, or to create some amazing art which can be utilized directly by the user. While there is a credit based system, meaning if someone wants to use DALL-E on a daily basis to create hundreds of items, it will cost them, there are also free monthly credits meaning everyone can get a taste for the possibilities of AI generated art. With so much potential, so many styles and images to consider, you can easily get lost and use up all your credits very quickly, but that is also a lot of the fun with it. All in all it is a cool and interesting use of AI which is simple to use and fun at the same time.
