Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy

Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy

Good day everyone,

I hope you are all well and having a great day, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things gaming and literature. Following on from a recent post I did titled "Elementary my dear Watson" where I brought up the topic of the latest game which will be released in the Sherlock Holmes series by Frogwares, I have decided to continue in this vein and do a post on each of the individual games to give readers a better idea of one of my favourite gaming series ever created. To start things off I will be writing about the first game released in the series, which was called Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy and was released for PC in 2002.

The Mystery of the Mummy

The series first began in September 2002 with Sherlock Holmes: The Mystery of the Mummy for PC. The debut is in the first-person perspective and follows Sherlock Holmes' investigation of a British archaeologist's mansion.

Sherlock receives a letter requesting his help to solve a mystery regarding the disappearance of Lord Montcalfe, a well known Egyptologist who has been missing for months. Sherlock has been contacted by Elisabeth Montcalfe, who is set to marry Sherlock's distant cousin shortly, and she is in desperate need of the detectives help. The mystery surrounding Lord Montcalfe's disappearance/death must be solved alone, as Watson is away on holidays so Sherlock sets out to the manor alone.

The famous detective discovers that Scotland yard had investigated the case and reported that all the evidence they found in the manor pointed to Lord Montcalfe killing himself by self-immolation. Elisabeth refuses to believe this, as she believes her father is still alive in her heart.

At the manor, Sherlock discovers it is full of traps and secrets, and an incredible adventure full of mysteries, riddles, and many developments which Sherlock must solve. As the detective begins to investigate and explore the manor, he must negotiate between the traps and the numerous suspects. Sherlock must also deal with a powerful Egyptian magic in the form of an Egyptian Mummy which is roaming around the manor and shooting people before he can discover the true secrets of what happened to Lord Montcalfe.

The player traverses through the game as Sherlock, moving between a series of set positions within the environments. The player also collects a series of items and clues as they move through the world, helping towards the solving of puzzles and getting past traps, while unravelling the overall mystery of the manor. Progress and notes are also kept within a notepad to help solve various puzzles which will be encountered as Sherlock.

The story unfold to reveal that the mummy is none other than  than Lord Montcalfe, Elisabeth's father. Apparently his doctor has been giving him laudanum that has caused paranoia and delusions, and he's now trying to achieve immortality and kill or drive off anyone who would touch his artefacts. Coupled with this is the desire of Elisabeth to take possession of the artefacts, assisted in doing so by her cousin Jonathan Parkey. Sherlock must overcome Elisabeth, Jonathan, and Lord Montcalfe to survive and solve this mystery.

Main Characters

Lord Montcalfe: The man suspected of being dead, he has disguised himself as a mummy and is roaming through his manor. He tries to kill both Parkey and his own daughter, Elisabeth, for trying to take his treasures. Has been driven mad by an excess of laudanum given to him by his doctor.

Elisabeth Montcalfe: The daughter of Lord Montcalfe and the leader of a cult who are trying to get their hands on Lord Montcalfe's artefacts. This is the real reason she hired Holmes, and all of this is revealed at the end of the game.

Jonathan Parkey: A cousin of Elisabeth's, who is also working for the same cult she is. He tries to kill Sherlock but end up being shot and killed by Lord Montcalfe.

John Watson: Holmes' devoted assistant, he has been away on holidays and only shows up for the first time during the endgame to listen to Holmes' explanation of the bizarre affair.

System Requirements

To run this game on your PC it will require a minimum of the following as per Steam:

This game is currently available to play for free on steam, meaning any new users who have not experienced the Sherlock series yet can get immersed into the game via this one. It should be kept in mind though that this game was the first game in the series, and therefore the Mystery of the Mummy is very different to play compared to subsequent entries in the franchise.  While in First Person Perspective, the environments are pre-rendered static backgrounds, offering up limited movement.

As a little piece of trivia, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, who created Holmes, was a huge fan of cricket. He originally intended to call his protagonist Sherrinford, but altered the name to Sherlock, possibly because of a cricketer who bore the name. Doyle also played cricket between 1899 and 1907 when he played ten first-class matches for the Marylebone Cricket Club, which is quite fitting as Baker Street is situated in the Marylebone district of London.

Have a great day,
