Real Burial Site of Jesus Christ?

Good day everybody,

Happy Easter and welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things life in general. Today I will be looking at a post I discovered on 'X' regarding the real burial tomb of Jesus Christ.

Jesus Christ Burial Tomb

In the below post on 'X' by user @Culture_Crit an interesting thread goes through the potential of the actual real burial tomb of Jesus Christ.

Within the thread the OP outlines how the tomb looks. It is known as the Edicule and is located in Jerusalem's Church of the Holy Sepulchre. Back in 2016 an amazing discovery was made which helps to further the theory that this was indeed the tomb of Jesus Christ following his crucifixion.

According to the scriptures and gospels Jesus Christ was buried in a rock-cut tomb belonging to Joseph of Arimathea. This was located outside the walls of Jerusalem and close to the location of the crucifixion, known as Golgotha, or "Place of the Skull" in Greek. It is also known as Calvary in Latin.

In the 4th century, around 325AD, the Roman Empress Helena identified the site as the location of Jesus' crucifixion. Helena was the mother of the Emperor Constantine and she led the charge at this time. Prior to this her son, Emperor Constantine, had embraced and legalised Christianity after being inspired by a vision of a burning cross. This quickly became the religion of the Roman Empire, and inspired Helena to visit the Holy Land.

Helena was about 80 years of age at the time when she set out on her pilgrimage in 325 AD. She found a site fitting the biblical description just outside the old city walls in Jerusalem. However, Emperor Hadrian had already discovered this location 200 years earlier. At that time Hadrian built a Pagan temple in an attempt to eradicate the influence of Christianity.

Helena had that temple destroyed, and an excavation began into the tomb beneath. Here a tomb with a burial bed cut from a limestone cave was discovered, according to the historian Eusebius. Legend also claims three crosses were discovered within the tomb, including that of Jesus Christ.

Her discovery led Emperor Constantine to construct the Church of the Holy Sepulchre over the tomb. The church suffered many ill fates, being rocked by fires, earthquakes, sacked by the Persians and then completely destroyed by a Muslim caliph in 1009. The church was rebuilt in the 11th century.

Many questions were left unanswered regarding the church and the tomb. Until 2016, the earliest archaeological evidence there dated to the Crusades which meant there was only about 1,000 years of history available. In 2016 researchers were allowed to delve further into their investigations of the tomb. It is said that Jesus was laid on a limestone burial bed. The bed within the current church had been covered by marble cladding since at least 1555 if not earlier than that. Nobody had seen the limestone burial bed in all that time, until the researchers were allowed in.

The researchers were allowed to open the marble tomb, mainly due to it being in need of repairs, but also for them to delve further into the history of the location. Within they discovered:

  • A marble slab with a cross carved into it
  • A layer of mortar beneath
  • A bed carved into the original limestone rock wall

From there scientists analysed the mortar to determine the last time it had been exposed to light was at the time of Emperor Constantine back in around 345 AD.

Given this stunning discovery there is much more confidence that this is in fact the correct site that Constantine found. Many still question did Constantine find the correct site, but according to accounts Christians had been praying there for centuries prior to Helena's arrival. While there are competing sites in Jerusalem, none have the weight of history behind them that the Church of the Holy Sepulchre does. The church and tomb are a massive tourist attraction and pilgrimage in modern times, and while we can never be fully certain, it seems likely that this is the real burial tomb from which Jesus Christ emerged three days after his crucifixion and death.

Have a great day and wonderful Easter.

Peace. CryptoGod-1.
