Good day everyone,
I hope you are all well and had an week so far, welcome to CryptoGod-1's blog on all things Gaming and Literature. Today I am going to do a quick post regarding a site I came across (from reading on Medium) which I think may be of interest to some people on here. First of all, I will make it clear I have not used this site and this is just a recommendation from what I have seen and not my own personal experience.
Side Hustle
So what is a side hustle? I think we are all here because we know exactly what that is: a means of making additional money outside of work. It why a lot of people came to Publish0x, for the chance to earn some additional funds either from reading or writing articles here. Many people post online claiming they have the best side hustle going, and while some do provide decent sources, many others are just scams. As I have zero experience in using this site I want to make it clear I am in no way promoting a scam, but I sincerely doubt this is one from all I have read online about it.
Rev.com
So without further ado, the side hustle I am looking at today is known as Rev.com. This is a website which will pays user for transcribing what has been said in a video or audio file. By working on Rev.com a user simply writes out what they have heard, and in doing so they become a freelancer who get paid weekly. The site allows for businesses or individuals to post jobs of their audio and video files which require transcribing. There is no shortage of jobs on the site, meaning a user can work as much or as little as they want. Payments are made based of how many minutes of audio / video is transcribed, with varying rates posted for each job. At the end of each week a user gets paid into their PayPal account directly from the website.
There are two different jobs at Rev; Transcriptionist, and Captioner.
Transcribing
The transcribing job involves listening to speech, audio, and basically anything which can be considered sound/language and writing it out in written form. The job at Rev requires a user to listen to the audio or video file and accurately type out what has been said. Along with that, the speakers need to be mentioned, meaning the format could be along the lines of:
Speaker 1: Hello Marus.
Speaker 2: Nice to see you Simon. How are things at home?
Speaker 1: No complaints, how about you? Are the kids having a nice summer vacation?
Speaker 2: Oh yes! They are making the most of the summer sunshine.
**I literally made this conversation up, and no, I don't believe people talk in such a weird way lol**
Payments vary for transcribing, but generally the rate of pay is done per minute of audio / video and ranges in and around the $0.30 to the $1.10 mark.
Captioning
The position of captioning is somewhat different, as this involves displaying text upon a video to provide information of what is happening in the video. For example, in a video of a man and woman talking, things like the man coughing would be [Man Coughing] or the woman starts to sing [Woman singing]. It is all about applying interpretive information to the video, and also requires the captioner to write what has been said along with describing (creatively) the sounds. The typed text is also synced with the audio / video file.
Application Process
The process of getting started on Rev is not that difficult, a user just clicks login and when brought to the login page, clicks on the "Looking to be a Rev Freelancer? Click here" button, as shown below.

Voila. Its that simple. Not! That is just the beginning. Once you go onto the next page and fill in your details, such as name, country, email, working experience, education, and what type of job you are looking for (Transcribing or Captioner) etc, you will be brought to another page where there are a couple of questions and tasks to complete. These included answering questions on "your last vacation" and "your favourite hobby." These required a minimum of 200 words and maximum of 500 words, clearly done to test the grammar and language capabilities of the applicant. Once that was completed, an email will be sent to the applicants account stating their application has been received and will be reviewed as soon as possible. However, this was where my enthusiasm faded.

As you can see in the above image, the wait list is around 4-12 weeks for approval. I was quite taken aback by this, as I would have expected it to be much shorter. However this seems to be due to a large demand for freelancers applying and all I can do is wait and see when I get another email with the "approval" or "rejection." Hopefully it will be an approval, if nothing else so I can continue the journey and experience to see how the site actually works. This may also be due to my location of residence, and the fact when I applied I only put down wanting to work as a transcriber and not a captioner.
Reviews of Rev
From what I have read online the site seems pretty popular, although some had also stated it is quite strict and severe in how it works. The first thing to note is that there are some people out there who will be very professional at this, including making use of things like foot pedals for stopping and starting the videos, maximising their effort and time.
Apparently once you do get past the initial approval you are given similar to an exam, at least from the reply of a captioner as I have shown below. Within this a user has 60 minutes of probationary time to complete a variety of freelance jobs, and they will then be scored based on their efforts in three different categories.
As the Medium user Mike Middelburg stated, it was only after the 60 minutes when he began to get good at the role but he had already been scored, and therefore only got an average of 3.9/5 when the requirement is 4/5. Tough going! It seems like there is little room for error, although one can look at this as maintaining high standards and can only be a good thing for the site. Only the best of the best can work on Rev.com, a key factor in drawing in more people looking to both freelance and to have their audio / video transcribed.
He did note that he earnt about $127 from his first days work, which if true, is quite amazing. However, he was kicked off the site after his second day due to his probationary period score, and that was that for him in terms of Rev.com. It is not a "simple side hustle" but a freelance job that needs focus and attention. However, if you are good at it, then it can be used as a simple side hustle by spending an hour or two a day (in your free time) to earn additional income every week. I am sure there are some people out there who could also make a full time career out of working on Rev.com if they really wished to.

So that's it. Rev.com seems like an interesting site for those who are looking to make some extra cash on the side, and there is also additional incentive for those who can speak and transcribe in multiple languages. The wait list is a bit off-putting but hopefully I will hear back regarding approval before the estimated time, and then I can investigate further on how the site truly works. Until then its certainly work checking out for others, and that additional money in your PayPal can always be invested further into crypto ;)
Have a great day.
Peace. CryptoGod-1.
