PSA: DON'T BE LIKE THIS PERSON!

As I'm always on Reddit, I came across a post that I thought was interesting and worth writing about. The post can be found here but it's basically about how someone had lost 2.5 BTC through either stupidity or a carelessness.

In a nutshell, the poster said that he had put his private keys to his BTC in his shoes and in his locker just before heading off to serve in the military. However, while he was in the military, his grandmother had cleaned out his locker and gave the shoes away to some homeless person. He now can't access those coins because his grandmother had passed away as well and obviously can't ask her questions pertaining to those valuable shoes.

The lesson from this post is that there are much better ways to keep your private keys safe. I really do wonder if this is post is a fictitious story but who would or can come up with a story as such? Assuming that it's a real story though, this post reminds me of the show I used to watch a decade ago called "1000 Ways to Die" (a show where they would highlight stories of how people have died in either freak accidents or sheer stupidity) because of the lack of prudence in storing those coins. I digress though. Either way, I hope that you've found better places to store your private keys than a shoe (of all things).

If you can't think of any, I would say here are three places that are most likely better than a shoe:

1) A bank vault
2) A notebook
3) A usb stick with a text file

In the future, I will be posting about different products that help keep private keys safe. I'm not referring to hardware wallets but rather items that have been made that's dedicated to ensuring that your private keys are kept safe offline.

I hope you found this post both educational and got a good kick out of it just as I did. The main takeaway though is to be prudent when deciding how to safely store your private keys. Let this be a reminder to all of us.
