Intro

Swell Network is a non-custodial liquid staking protocol, sets a unique precedent by streamlining the process of participating in Ethereum staking. By linking staking yields and DeFi opportunities in one accessible platform, it revolutionizes how users interact with digital assets.

At the core of its offerings is Liquid Staking NFT, which allows users to stake their ETH and receive the Swell variant, swETH, secured by swNFT. This process presents an opportunity for users to gain higher returns in a non-custodial and secure way. In line with this innovative approach, Swell Network extends the advantages of Staking 2.0. Users' swNFT not only encapsulates their swETH but also provides opportunities for compounding through the Swell Vaults. This approach optimizes the return potential on their ETH holdings.

Furthermore, Swell Network introduces an amalgamated solution for acquiring higher yields. By allowing users to stake and deposit their digital assets into a Swell Vault, Swell efficiently maximizes the compounded yield across DeFi. Echoing the democratic ethos of the blockchain, Swell Network offers a permissionless operating system. This system allows anyone to act as a node operator on the Swell Network, commencing with a minimum of 16 ETH to gain higher returns.

Furthermore, it fosters a non-custodial staking method through Swell's smart contracts, a novel application of atomic transactions. This grants users complete autonomy over their keys and crypto holdings, further enhancing the security and control over their assets.

Lastly, the Swell Network is underpinned by a community-driven ethos. It empowers its community to steer the future of ETH staking and actively participate in the governance of Swell. This democratic approach fosters a collective vision for Ethereum's evolution, serving the interests of stakers, node operators, and the broader ecosystem.

This emphasis on a community-led directive is realized through the Swell Network DAO, which enshrines the protocol's commitment to a permissionless, non-custodial, and liquid ETH staking philosophy. Through these distinguishing features, Swell Network is reshaping the way users interact with, invest in, and benefit from the dynamic world of cryptocurrency.

Primarily, Swell Network enhances the user experience by merging two critical processes. It allows users to stake Ether (ETH) and, in return, withdraw a Swell variant (swETH). The users can subsequently deposit their swETH into vaults. What these vaults offer is a refreshing and efficient usage of swETH. This includes adopting effective yield-enhancing strategies and extending opportunities for liquidity provision. Beyond these, the vaults can be employed as a source for collateral in borrowing, or alternatively as a lending source where tokens can be loaned out.

Moreover, the striking feature of Swell is its ability to provide an economical staking option. Contrasting with the conventional 4% annual percentage yield (APY) for staking ETH, Swell offers a more affordable option. It also dismantles the formidable barrier of a minimum 32 ETH stake, an amount needed to establish a validator node on Ethereum. By diminishing this requirement significantly, Swell expands the sphere of staking to include a wider audience, chiefly retail participants, who can now earn rewards with a small quantity of ETH.

Yet, the worth of the SWELL token remains uncertain, influenced heavily by initial selling pressure post token generation event (TGE). But the zero-fee policy and absence of a minimum deposit make Swell an enticing proposition. This is evident in its constantly augmenting total value locked (TVL). However, the extent to which this liquidity and prospective value will accrue to SWELL remains a question.

Currently, SWELL will be deployed for governance via delegate voting and liquidity mining. Despite the potential of drawing impressive numbers initially, this may wane over time as governance alone often doesn't suffice to stimulate demand for the token. Speculatively, the introduction of a fee switch allowing SWELL holders to stake tokens and access the protocol's fee revenue may be expected. Yet, this could be a distant possibility.

Meanwhile, Swell faces the significant challenge of competing with established players like Lido and Rocket Pool. These veterans, deeply rooted in DeFi and the broader ecosystem, have leveraged the flywheel effect. The effect signifies the powerful cycle where increased integrations and liquidity foster demand, thereby leading to further integrations and liquidity.

For Swell to effectively contest, it must flawlessly execute its distinctive features and assertive integration strategy with other DeFi protocols. Even as the protocol incentivizes swETH liquidity through an ongoing program, successful execution of a game-changer or a "silver bullet" will be pivotal. If achieved, Swell could draw marginal ETH inflows and ignite a competitive flywheel effect.

One possible silver bullet is the successful implementation of Diversified Validator Technology (DVT), making Swell the pioneering project to do so. This could lower the collateral requirement to a single ETH for independent operators, thereby unlocking capital efficiency and possibly luring a multitude of independent validators.

However, a crucial aspect to be noted is that while Swell may offer lower commission rates initially, the overall rates across Liquid Stake Tokens (LST) protocols could trend higher than the industry norm. This is primarily due to the potential impact on the profitability of node operators.

2024 Update

The Swell Network, initially recognized for its pioneering Liquid Staking Token (LST) services, has made significant strides in the blockchain sector. By allowing users to mint $swETH using $ETH, and in return, earn Pearls—soulbound tokens that guarantee a share in the forthcoming SWELL airdrop—the protocol has established a unique position in the market. This innovative approach has not only attracted a substantial user base, with over 100,000 participants, but has also amassed a Total Value Locked (TVL) exceeding $160 million, marking its expansion into the Liquid Staking Token realm as a resounding success.

Swell Network's Layer 2 Evolution

The announcement of Swell Network's Layer 2 (L2) solution was met with considerable anticipation, following a series of teasers that hinted at its development. This new layer promises to address some of the Ethereum mainnet's limitations by offering increased scalability and reduced transaction fees. Moreover, it introduces the concept of restaking flywheels, alongside providing users with native Restaking yield—a feature poised to outperform the native ETH staking yield offered by platforms like MakerDAO, which relies on Lido. This native yield is expected to surpass traditional staked ETH returns, potentially incorporating EigenLayer restaking points and Swell's own restaking incentives, depending on the launch timeline.

Technological Partnerships and Innovations

Swell Network's L2 distinguishes itself through strategic technological collaborations and the adoption of advanced blockchain functionalities:

  • Polygon zkEVM Integration: Swell's L2 will operate as a zkEVM, utilizing Polygon's zkEVM stack. This integration is further enhanced by the use of Polygon's Chain Development Kit (CDK), a tool also employed by notable entities such as Immutable, Canto, Manta, Astar, and Nubank in Brazil, among others.

  • EigenLayer's Actively Validated Services (AVSs): Swell plans to introduce multiple AVSs, leveraging the restaked ETH of EigenLayer to bolster the security of its own network through a 'Restaked Rollup' approach.

  • AltLayer's Restaked Rollups: Gaining traction from its ALT airdrop, AltLayer has been instrumental in developing the 'Restaked Rollups' framework, which Swell intends to utilize. This framework encompasses mechanisms for faster finality (MCAH), decentralized verification (VITAL), and sequencing (SQUAD), promising to enhance the efficiency and decentralization of rollup operations.

Yaoqi Jia, CEO of AltLayer, expressed enthusiasm for Swell's adoption of restaked rollups, highlighting the potential for these technologies to revolutionize the construction of decentralized networks and the expansion of Liquid Staking Token finance (LRTfi) on Swell's rollup platform.

  • Chainlink Collaboration: Swell's integration into the Chainlink BUILD program in mid-February marks a significant milestone, granting the protocol access to Chainlink's oracle services and technical support. This partnership not only facilitates a new avenue for fee generation through sequencer and staking/restaking fees but also strengthens Swell's infrastructure for secure cross-chain interoperability, notably between Arbitrum and the Ethereum mainnet. Swell's decision to integrate Chainlink's Cross-Chain Interoperability Protocol (CCIP) over alternative standards underscores its commitment to leveraging top-tier technological solutions to enhance platform security and functionality.

Conclusion

Swell Network's strategic expansion into Layer 2, coupled with its collaborations with leading blockchain technology providers, positions the protocol at the forefront of the evolving decentralized finance landscape. By addressing key challenges such as scalability, transaction costs, and network security, Swell is not only enhancing its existing LST services but also paving the way for innovative staking and restaking solutions. As the blockchain community eagerly anticipates the roll-out of Swell's L2 and its accompanying features, the protocol's commitment to technological excellence and strategic partnerships underscores its potential to redefine the parameters of liquid staking and decentralized finance.
