Stablecoins Are Contracting. Capital Is Exiting. This Isn’t the Bottom—It’s a Phase

There’s a simple yet underrated indicator: the total market capitalization of stablecoins (USDT + USDC + others).

Historically, this metric almost always trends upward. It reflects the inflow of liquidity into the crypto market. However, there are rare moments when this trend breaks.

So far, there have only been two such episodes:

  • October 2018

  • June 2022

And now, we are witnessing the third.

What Does This Mean?

A decline in stablecoin market capitalization means money is leaving the ecosystem, not just being redistributed within it. This isn’t a rotation from altcoins into Bitcoin. This is a net outflow of liquidity.

It’s crucial to understand the nuance here.

This is not a signal that we’ve hit the bottom.

In previous cycles, the contraction of stablecoins occurred during the late phase of a decline, but the actual bottom formed later—specifically when:

  • The outflow stopped.

  • The market capitalization stabilized.

  • A gradual reversal to the upside began.

It was precisely at that moment that Bitcoin found its price floor.

So, the logic unfolds like this:

  1. Liquidity Compression

  2. Slowdown of Outflow

  3. Formation of a Plateau

  4. Resumption of Stablecoin Growth

  5. Formation of the BTC Bottom

Currently, we are at steps 1–2. The process is advanced, but not yet complete.

What Should You Pay Attention To?

Not the price of Bitcoin in isolation. Instead, focus on the behavior of liquidity.

If the market capitalization of stablecoins stops falling, that will be a far more significant signal than yet another "local bounce" on the price chart.

For myself, I track liquidity dynamics above all. Price is merely the consequence.
