$747 Million Loss in 8 Days. This is What True Capitulation Looks Like

This might be the most severe capitulation signal I've seen recently.

Trend Research has completely closed its ETH position.
From roughly $2 billion down to zero. In just 8 days.

Here's what actually happened—step by step, without the emotion.

Trend Research started accumulating ETH in December-January, with an average entry around $3,100.
What followed was a classic leveraged loop via Aave:
– Buying ETH on an exchange
– Depositing ETH as collateral on Aave
– Borrowing stablecoins
– Buying more ETH
– Repeating the cycle

This inflated their position to 651,757 ETH. At its peak, they had about $958 million in debt on Aave.

When the price fell toward $2,000, the position approached the liquidation threshold. The choice was stark and simple: either get liquidated by the market, or close the position themselves.

They chose the latter.
Average exit price: ~$2,055.
Realized loss: ~$747 million.
Their wallet now holds 0 ETH.

This is capitulation in its purest form.
Not a Twitter post.
Not "I'll think about it."
But a complete, forced unwinding due to risk structure.

And this is where it gets interesting.

While some capitulate, others continue to accumulate.

Bitmine (Tom Lee) is still buying ETH.
They hold about 4.2 million ETH.
Average cost: $3,600–$3,900.
Unrealized loss: approximately $7.5 billion.
Yet, they recently bought an additional ~20,000 ETH around $2,100.

This doesn't mean "the bottom is definitely here." It means something else.

Major downward moves are very often accompanied by precisely these kinds of events:
– Forced exits
– Leverage unwinding
– Position resets
– Maximum pain

The market isn't obliged to reverse immediately. But such selling almost never happens "at the highs."

The key takeaway:
Capitulation is not an opinion; it's an action.
And when it happens to those who managed billions, it's a sign the market is nearing the end of its active decline phase — but not a sign that a rally will start tomorrow.
