YouTube Timestamp

YouTube video timestamps

I wanted to share  and write about a National Geographic documentary about North Korea where it shows an eye surgeon  going there and treating hundreds of blind people for free. North Korea has a big problem with blindness, the main reason being malnutrition. But it has been removed from YouTube.

Snd since it's more than an hour long documentary, I thought some people don't have the attention span to sit and watch it all so, wanted to show you a 5 minutes piece that shows how people are brainwashed and the control the regime has in their lives. Many of them refuse to shake the hand of the doctor who brought back the most important human sense, sight. For free! And many of them not only say a simple thanks to him, but instead are thankful for this miracle to the dead grandfather and father of Kim Jong Un. The problem is that the video has been removed.

Anyway, let's say tomorrow you want to share a YouTube video to a friend but what is important on that video is in the middle, let's say 5 minutes and 10 seconds after the video started.

What do you do. One solution is to simply write to him/her go at 5:10. The other option is to send him directly there.

This feature has been available for some time now but most people don't even know about it or don't know how to use that feature. There are plenty of articles, guides and tutorials online, but here's how I do it. (I think there are 3 different, but similar options).

I usually use my phone to watch YouTube videos, so what I do is copy the share link on the Android.   app. Then I copy paste it on my Chrome or Brave browser.

Let's use an example, a short video where a guy is talking about the original documentary. I copy and paste the Share link on my browser. The mobile link format is like this:
https://youtu.be/KdUp5dCRlpc

After I did that, I get a link like this:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KdUp5dCRlpc&feature=youtu.be

Now all you have to do is remove the "feature=youtu.be" part and add t= after the &. And then I add the timestamp.  I will use a random part of the video. Let's say I want the video to start for my friend at 1 minute and 2 seconds.

So I add 01m02s. And the link becomes :
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KdUp5dCRlpc&t=01m02s

Always test before sending. Copy paste the link in your browser to see if indeed it starts at the desired point. I have tried a couple of times to use the mobile link format but didn't work. Also, some websites say that sometimes it doesn't work with the & character and you should add instead ? .

In that case our link would become
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KdUp5dCRlpc?t=01m02s

So, that's how you use timestamp markers on YouTube videos. If you have any difficulties or want to learn more, just search on Google how to add timestamp to YouTube link.
