The biggest crypto crashes through cryptocurrency history

While many have benefited from amazing surges in cryptocurrency, it is hard not to deny that it's crashes have been substantial too. While there are phases when a lot of cryptocurrencies crash together, there are times when one of them gets annihilated individually.

I was following some of the trends by looking at easy to access graphs and news items and these appear to be the most significant crashes seen in crypto history.

  1. Bitcoin's Crash in 2013: In 2013, the price of Bitcoin rose from around $13 to nearly $260 in just a few months, before crashing back down to below $70, marking a drop of over 70%. The crash was caused by a combination of factors, including a sharp rise in demand followed by a large sell-off, as well as regulatory concerns and the collapse of the Mt. Gox exchange.

  2. Ethereum's DAO Hack in 2016: Ethereum's DAO (Decentralized Autonomous Organization) was a crowdfunding project that raised over $150 million in ether, a cryptocurrency built on the Ethereum blockchain. However, in June 2016, a hacker exploited a vulnerability in the DAO's code, siphoning off around a third of the funds. The price of ether subsequently plummeted from around $20 to under $12, a drop of around 40%.

  3. Bitcoin's Crash in 2017-2018: After reaching an all-time high of almost $20,000 in December 2017, Bitcoin's price crashed in 2018, falling to under $4,000 by the end of the year, marking a drop of around 80%. The crash was caused by a combination of factors, including regulatory crackdowns, a lack of mainstream adoption, and concerns over the scalability and sustainability of Bitcoin as a currency.

  4. Ripple's Crash in 2018: Ripple's XRP cryptocurrency saw its value rise dramatically in late 2017 and early 2018, before crashing in early 2018. The crash was triggered by concerns over the regulatory status of XRP, as well as the ongoing legal battle between Ripple Labs and the SEC. XRP's price fell from a high of over $3 in January 2018 to under $0.25 by December of that year, a drop of over 90%.

  5. COVID-19 Crash in 2020: In March 2020, as the COVID-19 pandemic began to spread around the world, the price of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies plummeted, along with the stock market and other financial assets. Bitcoin's price fell from around $10,000 to under $4,000 in just a few weeks, marking a drop of around 60%. The crash was caused by a combination of factors, including panic selling, a lack of liquidity, and concerns over the economic impact of the pandemic

  6. The overall crypto crash in 2022: Bitcoin slumped from 65000 to under 20000 and there were fears that there would be no bottom. People lost thousands and millions of dollars and it shook a lot of the newbies.

  7. LUNA crash in 2022: Along with the general crypto downtrend, LUNA got annihilated. It has been estimated that 60 billion $ got wiped out in this crash. This was related to the TerraUSD annihilation and people went bankrupt in this crash. The lesson learnt was not too focus investments in one cryptocurrency, but to have a diverse portfolio.

I had just tried entering the crypto market in late 2021, when everything crashed in 2022. I lost a few hundred dollars as my earnings were very little. I had not spent any real money in buying crypto.

Did you lose a lot in any of these crashes?
