According to the data tracking by @WatcherGuru, total liquidation of cryptocurrency reached an staggering $12.5 billion in October 2026, completely upending the traditional "Uptober" bullish narrative.
For leverage traders, the month was a masterclass in market risk, wiping out an estimated 3.13 million trading positions globally.
Here is what happened and numbers behind the leverage flush and the black swan event that triggered it all.
The Long Vs Short Wipeout
Liquidation data shoes severe asymmetry in the market. Traders positioned heavily for a continuous upward rally bore the absolute brunt of the volatility.
• Long Liquidations: $9.213 billion (approx. 74% of the total)
• Short Liquidations: $3.290 billion (approx. 26% of the total)
While short seller caught some pain during brief mid-month pumps, the overwhelming majority of loses come from over leveraged buyer's who were caught completely by that storm.
What Triggered The Cascade
October was doing relatively normal until a sudden unprecedented black swan event broke the market confidence om October 29, 2026.
A massive security breach struck Binance resulting in losing over $6.3 Billions from exchange wallets. As the news came out the panic got intense and this structural shock was further compounded by sharp institutional outflows from U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs, rapidly draining liquidity from the market.
Cascading Liquidation Effect On Bitcoin
Prior to the panic, Bitcoin had been flexing its muscles within a healthy $76,000–$84,000 range. Following the breach Bitcoin rapidly declined to plunging below $77,000.
Because a massive portion of the market was using high leverage to bet on an end-of-month breakout, the sudden price drop triggered a domino effect. When a trader's position is forced into liquidation, the exchange automatically sells the asset to cover the loss, pushing the price down further and triggering the next batch of liquidations.
Now October 2026 serve as shark multi-billion-dollar reminder of crypto’s golden rule: Leverage kills. While market fundamentals had been leaning bullish external security exploits and structural vulnerabilities can liquidate billions in the blink of an eye. As the market started to recover from Binance exploit shockwave, capital perseveration and risk management remained paramount.
