eBay Makes International Shipping Easier

eBay Makes International Shipping Easier

One of the things that used to annoy me a ton with selling online was international shipping. Not only did it come with the risk of your stuff going through multiple hands and maybe never getting to the destination intact, it was also ripe with a lot of fraud. People would try all sorts of nonsense from claiming the package never arrived to chargebacks to shipping agencies themselves misrepresenting cost and then charging markups to move a package already in transit. The whole thing was a racket rigged against a seller, so I basically wrote of international shipping altogether. Unless it was a buyer who I had worked with already and I knew well, I only sold domestic and kept that as a solid rule.

Now, eBay opened up the global market again, at least for US sellers sending out. Basically, the program is dubbed "eIS," and it works in a two-step approach.

To start, a buyer simply makes sure that the eIS option in the seller features is turned on. That's it, no other work is needed.

After a sale occurs with an international buyer, eBay then gives the seller a domestic address, say in Illinois, and the buyer only pays domestic shipping via the eBay shipping label feature. This is far more predictable, and the costs are easy to control. Then eBay takes the precoded package, moves it in bulk across the pond, and Europe or Asia buyers get their packages routed once the plane or ship lands in port. The move is a no-brainer, especially given the volume discounts eBay can leverage with bulk commercial shipping versus the individual or small business. And, since the whole eIS thing goes through eBay's tracking system, packages are scanned and monitored from end to end, improving delivery security.

There's no question that eBay isn't the most inexpensive way to sell online, but the company is working smart to make it easier for people to buy and sell on the platform, especially in a global market. E-commerce is only increasing, especially now when the cost of retail new goods are skyrocketing. Finding higher quality vintage or used items that meet the same purpose are in high demand, as well as having access to goods not available readily at home.

I'm actually thinking about rebuying eBay stock again when all the Gamestop buyout chatter dies down and the price settles again. Might as well make profit two ways on that company.
