Paypal Approved as Crypto Provider in the UK. Now What?!

By Invictus21 | Crypto Mademoiselle | 3 Nov 2023

Seems like 2023 could end with fireworks for Crypto enthusiasts after SBF's conviction and the approval of Paypal as a Crypto provider by British Authorities. Regarding the SBF news, I was really cynical the charges would stick as I wrote in this article asking whether SBF would really do some time in jail. Back to Paypal, former Elon Musks's baby - PayPal was approved as a crypto service provider in the UK by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) on October 31, 2023 as confirmed by Reuters here. This allows PayPal to offer crypto buying, selling, and holding services to its UK customers.Yuhuuuu!

PayPal's approval as a crypto service provider is an important development for the UK crypto industry. It shows that the FCA is willing to work with leading financial institutions to bring crypto services to the mainstream. It helps that PayPal has been established as a trusted financial institution, and its approval as a crypto service provider is likely to boost consumer confidence in cryptocurrencies.

PayPal's crypto services are currently only available to UK customers, but the company has said that it plans to expand these services to other countries in the future.Positive domino effect expected, I think!

Implications for the UK crypto industry:

  • Increased legitimacy and adoption: PayPal is a trusted financial institution with a large customer base which would probably lead to increased adoption. (According to PayPal's Q1 2023 earnings report, PayPal had over 446 million active accounts and processed over 23 billion transactions in the quarter)
  • Increased competition: PayPal's entry into the UK crypto market will increase competition among crypto exchanges and other crypto service providers. This could lead to lower fees and better services for consumers. Who wouldn't welcome that!?
  • Regulatory clearance: The FCA's approval of PayPal is a sign that the UK regulator is supportive of crypto innovation and is willing to work with leading financial institutions to bring crypto services to the mainstream. Hopefully, this should nudge the SEC somehow to budge positively on the issue.

How will consumers benefit:

  • More convenient and accessible crypto services because Paypal's initial mission to democtratize banking through emails. Hopefully, this further facilitates consumers to buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies.
  • Increased consumer protection:As a regulated financial institution Paypal and its crypto services are subject to FCA vigilance overlooking their operations and hopefully avoiding a similar fate compared to SBF's FDX( Though nothing is assured and you should ALWAYS do your due diligence)

How will businesses benefit:

  • New opportunities to reach and engage customers: PayPal's crypto services could provide businesses with new opportunities to reach and engage customers who are interested in cryptocurrencies. Keep in mind that, PayPal is accepted by over 34 million merchants worldwide.
  • Reduced costs and increased efficiency: PayPal's crypto services could help businesses to reduce the costs and increase the efficiency of their crypto-related transactions. Fingers crossed!
  • Increased brand awareness and credibility: Businesses that accept cryptocurrencies through PayPal could benefit from increased brand awareness and credibility among crypto users.

Transactions UK Paypal Users now do with Crypto:

UK PayPal users can now buy, sell, and hold cryptocurrencies. They can also use their cryptocurrency to pay for goods and services at merchants that accept PayPal.

Here is a list of the crypto transactions that UK PayPal users can now do:

  • Buy cryptocurrencies with fiat currency
  • Sell cryptocurrencies for fiat currency
  • Hold cryptocurrencies in their PayPal wallet
  • Send cryptocurrencies to other PayPal users
  • Receive cryptocurrencies from other PayPal users
  • Use cryptocurrencies to pay for goods and services at merchants that accept PayPal

In order to buy cryptocurrencies on PayPal, as a user you must first set up a PayPal wallet and add a bank account or debit card. Once you have added a payment method, you can select the cryptocurrency you want to buy and enter the amount you want to buy. PayPal will then charge the your chosen payment method and deposit the cryptocurrency into your PayPal wallet.

Are you a Paypal user as well as a Crypto HODLER? How do you feel about this news?

Closing Thoughts:

This decision and announcement is positive for the Cryptocurrency market and legitimacy in general. In addition, it will ensure both protection of consumers through regulation as well as great publicity for adoption. As always, this is not financial advice, therefore you should always do your own research and even consult with a certified reputable financial adviser.
