Sui Network: Mainnet Launch Incoming, Community Access Program Clarified

By Valdyr | Crypto-Curious Blogger | 16 Apr 2023

I wasn't expecting to write about Sui Network again only a few days after my last post about the project, but it just so happens that Sui has made a major announcement over the weekend regarding exchange listings and further clarification of their Community Access Program - a program that still had many people speculating about an airdrop in spite of the platform ardently denying that any airdrop was in the works.

To sum up, it turns out the the Community Access Program is in fact a presale of $SUI tokens that is being launched on three exchanges: OKX, KuCoin, and ByBit. These launches are happening by the end of the month, and seem to be coinciding when we can expect the Sui mainnet to go live.

There are a handful of other rules and restrictions, but the general gist is that testnet users must have been registered and active on the official Sui Discord server before February 1st of this year, and be able to register and pass the KYC requirements on their chosen exchange(s). Qualifying users will need to visit Sui's verification portal to verify their eligibility. The bulk of the details and explanation is listed on Sui's official Discord, but as the server is constantly at capacity, I'll be including a lot of screenshots for those of you who aren't able to join the server directly.

However, as the weekend unfolded, more restrictions and confusion emerged concerning the Community Access Program, including one big doozy: United States citizens and residents are ineligible to participate. That's on top of the disappointment and anger many users felt now knowing, ultimately, that there really is to be nothing along the lines of an airdrop whatsoever. (To be fair, Sui Network has vehemently denied that there would be any airdrop for months now, but hope remained strong for many, apparently.)

In addition to some disappointment to learn (again) that there will be no official airdrop from Sui, I've also seen a lot of surprise in various Sui project discords that the mainnet seems to be so close to launching. The last few weeks of this latest version of the testnet has not been without its rough patches - there have been constant issues with the testnet itself being overloaded (including hours into days when users were unable to claim testnet funds from either the Discord faucet or directly via their wallets), in addition to many of the projects I've been interacting with still needing to iron out quite a few more details to ensure smooth interactions between their platforms and the Sui network.

Don't get me wrong - I've participated in a few testnets at this point, and I have to say with the Sui Network being this extensive, I've had a great time trying to work with different platforms and projects and help give feedback on things that didn't go as planned. But I get the impression that some folks, including myself, think that Sui would benefit by delaying the launch of the mainnet for a bit longer to give everyone involved more time to get things right before going on to the big leagues. As it stands, it appears that the mainnet may be live by the end of April, if these exchange listings are any indication.

Moving forward, is it worth it to keep interacting with the Sui testnet now that we know - absolutely, for sure - that there is to be no airdrop? Personally, I say yes. As I mentioned above, this is the most involved I've been able to be in a testnet phase so far, and it's been very enjoyable to test out so many new apps and platforms! Also, while there is to be no official Sui airdrop, it appears that some of the projects building on Sui may be doing some of their own $SUI airdrops to their testers. (Warning! Warning! DYOR! There are obviously a lot of scams out there, so be very careful who you choose to interact with during this time especially!) And of course, as I mentioned in my post earlier this week, many of the projects building on Sui Network are also offering airdrops of their own tokens and NFTs to thank testnet users for interacting with their platforms, so you still may be able to pick up a few treats to thank you for your time and feedback over the next few weeks.
