China is the first country to introduce CBDC, the central bank's alternative to digital currency. CBDC is always in controversy, and Chinese CBDC (Digital Yuan) is also not controversy-free; its biggest controversy is regarding the expiration date.
Expiry Date on Digital Yuan
It is believed that an expiration date may be inserted (or has already been inserted) with the digital yuan. This is done so that people can access the digital yuan in time and not hoard it.
No expiration date is possible
However, one side claims that China is not putting an expiration date on its CBDC. Digital vouchers have also been issued by the Chinese government; the expiration date is on those vouchers and not on the CBDC.
Thoughts
It is difficult to believe that the digital yuan can be given an expiration date since even commodity sellers would not sell anything in such a currency. They will also have to spend such currency immediately; it will not be able to be used as money.
