According to on-chain data, Tate bought around 122,827 HYPE tokens about two years ago for an average price of $4.48, investing roughly $550,000.
HYPE is now trading around $89, meaning his investment has turned into several million dollars.
Recently, a wallet linked to Tate transferred around 20,950 HYPE, worth about $1.87 million, to Binance.
This doesn't necessarily mean he sold it, but moving the tokens to an exchange gives him the option to sell or take some profit.
He still reportedly holds around 63,550 HYPE, worth around $5.6 million. His total unrealized profit is estimated at around $7.2 million.
My guess is that he is liquidating at least some of his crypto because he needs the money to deal with the legal problems he and his brother are facing in multiple countries.
They need lawyers, and with the Romanian authorities opening new cases against the Tate brothers, there could be a lot of legal expenses ahead.
I also wonder whether some of the money could be intended for trying to influence or bribe authorities in Romania.
But to be clear, this is completely my speculation. There is no evidence that he is using the money to bribe anyone, and moving crypto to Binance does not necessarily mean he has sold it.
It is just interesting timing, considering his legal situation and the amount of money he has recently moved.
