It may not be easy to convince someone of the value of meditation, as long as this person doesn't make the connection between how one feels and the thoughts one thinks.
The thousands of thoughts we think each day are directly related to the feelings we have. In fact, you can't find a happy thought that contains truth without first feeling good. And vice versa, you can't find a nasty thought when you feel happy. Just pay attention, when you walk down the street and you feel angry or frustrated, you will only see people around you who have these similar feelings.
A popular method that you have probably heard of is Mindfulness. This is one way to learn to steer your mind in the direction you want. But to be mindful you must first know how to control your mind!
By practicing meditation you learn to recognize who you really are. You are not your body but you are so much more. We sometimes talk about the soul and that comes close enough in this case. Recognizing who you really are is what Hindu philosophy calls 'Brahman' realization.
I don't really mind what you want to call it in the end. Through many years of daily meditation I have learned to recognize how my soul brahmman feels.
That every morning I reset to who I really am by stop thinking and aligning with who I really am, and therefore feel great, happy for the new day.
That's why I meditate daily.
If I can ever give someone life advice it is: Learn to meditate and that every day for 15 minutes, preferably as soon as you get up in the morning.
As I started this story I would like to say again that it will not be easy to convince someone of the value of focusing 15 minutes a day on a sound or on your breathing, so that you stop thinking and let the true self stream.
