Firstly I should state that I am not an American and I am not a resident of America. I do however have a keen interest under going on in us politics because of its impact on the world stage
So I've just come across the news that Trump has been impeached in the lower house of Parliament. The impeachment process must move to to the house of senators to decide on a suitable punishment for the charge,
Given the partisan trends that have been shown in US politics it appears highly unlikely that the impeachment will pass the house of Senators, which is largely made up of Republicans.
The question is should the Republican party stand by US president Trump purely because he stood on a Republican vote, or should they cut their losses and asked Trump to vacate office.
Continued association by the Republican party with president Trump, given all the controversies he comes with can only damage the long term reputation of the party. Ongoing association with someone mired with such legal and ethical issues cannot go without damage to long standing politicians and therefore their party.
It is understandable that the Republicans would want to hold on to Trump because with Trump comes the Republican power hold on the US government. However getting rid of Trump might strengthen the republicans future.
Trump cleverly changes the debate to that of the Republicans vs the opposition parties. However, the real battle should be for the soul of the Republican party itself. No one is thinking about a challenge within the Republicans. This will be to their own detriment.
I think they should cut their losses and let him go.
