Microsoft announced yesterday that its new cloud-based OS, Windows 365, would officially launch on August 2, 2021. Windows 365 will work similarly to game streaming services like Google Stadia, where the hardware running the OS is stored in a data center which streams to a device, but its focus will be on productivity. Windows 365 will allow you to access your cloud PC from almost any device, and it will be in the same state as you last left it in regardless of device.
All sorts of devices like Macs, tablets, Linux devices and even phones will be able to use Windows 365 to stream a full desktop PC, including all apps, data and settings. Windows 365 will launch streaming a version of Windows 10, but Microsoft intends to eventually upgrade this to Windows 11. However, Microsoft is currently only offering this service to businesses, as many businesses currently rely on a mix of office and remote working.
Microsoft still has not released details such as the specifications of the machines used for streaming, supported resolutions, and the pricing. However, Microsoft may release more information soon and possibly even release it for personal use, as it has done in the past with products such as Microsoft Office.
