[INTRO]
So I was at my local comic book store today and I saw they had M.O.M. Mother Of Madness #1.
It came out on the 21st of July and if you haven't heard about it well here's the what the hype is about:
It's a comic book written by Emilia Clarke....you know... the Mother of Dragons....Game of Thrones, Han Solo and Terminator actress. She's been teasing it's release on her social media for quite a while.
Now I am going to be honest. As much of a geek as I am, I wasn't all that excited for this book. Simply because being a good actress (and she is really good) doesn't automatically make someone a good writer. So I was interested but not like super hyped. But as you can imagine, most of her fans are super excited. I don't know if this is true, but my comic book store guys told me the book is almost completely sold out in the US. Doesn't suprise me.
But lucky little me got in right on time as they had a copy left and so I payed about 7 euros for this bad boy and took it home. And somehow I found myself reading it right away.
So here is my unprofesional-nobody-cares-but-I-want-to-write-about-it-anyways review of M.O.M. MOTHER OF MAYHEM. I won't be spoiling anything too specific so you can still keep on reading if you haven't read this book yet.
[REVIEW]
"I kinda like it. For real though, it's a cool book."
The concept of the main character is really solid and relatable. The superpowers make sense and allthough the world around her is kinda bonkers, it's a very realistic potential near future.
The story is very basic: messed up person with abilities gets a super hero origin story. Nothing too special but it's still part one, so no judgement, all cool. Storywise I am interested in seeing it unfold in parts 2 and 3.
The graphic art is at times really well done. I found myself being distracted at the pictures and background from time to time. Just too much happening. Still a very nice art style though. Nothing too basic or too artsy and fitting of the world of the story is in.
It's the writing bubbles where I get abit confused. See the main character breaks the fourth wall allot telling her story and that's fine. Then of course there are things happening in the story and people talking to each other in present time, as well as through out different times as there are quite a few flashbacks to the main character's life. Then there's allot of background commentary from unimportant characters in the background. Then there are constant TVs or radios in the room that get their own text bubbles as well. There is just sooo many things happening on each page it's abit overwhelming. Not to mention the characters at times have a very casual American way of speaking English and then suddenly there are these more British words/expressions that get thrown into the mix. Whilst reading I found myself switching accents for the voices of the different characters (in my head) multiple times. I can't quite pinpoint the right speaking voice.
So that's really my big issue with this book.
A slight other issue is it's constant portrayal of sexist men. I know there is allot of sexism in the world and as a woman of 28 years I have experienced enough and heard it all. Nothing in this book is 'new'. BUT it's the sheer amount of sexist talk in this book that's just slightly over the top. And it get's tiring after a while. I am all for talking about it, improving the work place and equal pay and rights for women. I am all for putting it in films and books and music. But even I think this is just a bit too much and the story suffers from it.
Even so, after finishing reading the book, I wasn't confused or let down anymore. I am actually really interested in part 2 and 3 and seeing how this story unfolds.
And I would definitly recommend it to a friend.
So that's what I think of M.O.M. MOTHER OF MADNESS #1. If you've read it, let me know what you thought in the comments below.
