Watch Quality   A

Since this is on cable, the quality is excellent.

Plot Summary

A group of women who work at a club become embroiled in a gangster's criminal operation.  But when an innocent girl falls victim, the women determine to bring down the man responsible.

Star Power   A-

Davis is magnificent as the smart, tough, yet flawed heroine.  Bogart is compelling though without the gravity of his later work.  The women in the cast steal the show.

Chill Factor   C

The first half of the movie smolders despite the dark topic.  In the second half, however, the tension and downward spiral may ruin the mood of your date night.

Mental Health Check   C-

The worldly Mary seems to be in control until family disrupts her carefully constructed facade.  The tragic elements and just-off-screen violence are gut-wrenching, although the quest for justice keeps the film from becoming too dark.

Overall Grade    B+

This movie represents a rare proto-feminist and politically relevant noir.  Bette Davis's character is complex, human, tragic and loveable.  The plot is a bit predictable, but the film is worth watching for Davis's performance.
