While we have heard of players "receiving" part of their salary in Bitcoin that has not really been the case. In these instances, a separate company would make the transaction on behalf of the player the team just sent the money where the player wanted it to go. Not to undercut what these athletes have done as it was a huge move for Bitcoin adoption but it still was some extra steps that the league and team had no part in.
Last week the UFC changed that as they announced that part of their partnership with Crypto.com was going to be special bonuses paid to the top 3 vote-getting fighters on a Crypto.com poll! Previously the Fight of the Night and other Performance Bonuses were really up to Dana White and the UFC now while they have kept that they have added on this additional payout allowing fans a new way to interact! For the top 3 finishers in the poll, the payouts are $30,000 USD in Bitcoin to the poll winner, $20,000 in Bitcoin to the one who finishes second, and $10,000 in Bitcoin to the person who finishes third.
Now, these bonuses are currently only available for the pay-per-view fights but if they are able to generate high levels of engagement from fans it would make a ton of sense to add them to all of the Friday Night Fight Cards as well. I could also see further expansion into different things like knockouts or other types of finishes receiving a bonus. The sky is really the limit with this and it is really interesting to see this begin. I would expect that eventually or especially for huge cards the amount to increase significantly and the top vote-getter receiving 1 BTC for instance and the amount given out changed to a set amount of Bitcoin.
The results of the UFC 273 Crypto.com poll had Khamzat Chimaev finishing first, Alexander Volkanovski finishing second, and Petr Yan finishing third. While this time it was all people on the Main Event and fighters fighting for the two belts that were up for grabs there is hope that in the future we will see the polls start to go to those that are in the preliminary fights and honestly the ones who could probably benefit from the bonus more than the main event fighters. Overall it was a successful rollout and that is what matters first and foremost!
