Roughly three months ago Brave caused quite a bit of commotion when they announced the development of an AI assistant. After all most people use Brave because of its privacy-preserving features and this runs counterintuitive to that very idea. Brave has successfully navigated the field between privacy protection and the ease and access of an AI assistant. This has been done by not only not saving nor recording the chats but also by not allowing any sort of data to be recorded and harvested to further train an AI model.
I have used Leo a lot on my phone and it is fantastic at generating general summaries for things and allowing you to click on a section of the summary to bring you to the source. Unlike other AI assistants brave does a few things in particular to keep privacy at the forefront. These things include using a reverse proxy, immediate discarding of responses, and not requiring a login or account to utilize. With other AI's these are commonly used things in particular with the login/account which make them so successful.
As Brave has continued to add these fantastic features they have also created enhanced or even better versions. With Leo that has been done with Leo Premium, which costs $15 a month. For the Leo Premium AI it does seem that you will be sacrificing at least a little bit of your privacy because of the language model you are dealing with (Claude by Anthropic) but Brave does do what it can to maintain your privacy. The current version of Claude produces longer, more structured responses, follows instructions better than previous versions of Instant, and shows improvements in math, coding, multilingual abilities, and question-answering. Intestingly and I think importantly Anthropic used Brave's Search API to train their latest model, Claude 2, on high-quality data to help optimize Claude’s outputs for retrieval augmented generation (RAG) queries.
This goes to show the importance and impact that Brave has in the language model world now. Privacy is growing again in importance and for that, Brave wants to not only present but maintain its edge.
