Sunsetting on vBAT
Earlier this year Brave Browser announced that they would be sunsetting vBAT later on this year. There was no date given for this though and we were told that it would be announced later on. Well now that update has been released and we have our sunset date for vBAT, October 31, 2023. Now that being said what is vBAT and how does it compare to BAT?
vBAT is the name for virtual BAT and was on Brave's centralized system. It was not actually BAT as it was not on the blockchain but would be converted to BAT if/when you connected a custodial account (Uphold, Gemini, or bitFlyer). I know a lot of people are hesitant or just straight up hate these options available but this is what regulators required from Brave for their product to not run afoul of the law.
Also, the move is a pretty significant move for Brave to not only lower costs but also to move to a much more decentralized structure. Being part of the crypto community I think this is a huge move that a centralized entity is at least moving part of its entity towards a decentralized one. While it is likely driven by cost savings of not having to deal with their own system a win is a win at the end of the day!
New Supported Regions
A number of new regions are now currently available for people to connect their custodial accounts to. By doing this before the October 31 sunset they will be able to claim their vBAT before it all goes away and those countries include Croatia, Greece, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Taiwan. The Dev team also announced a huge huge win for users in India as soon people in India will be able to connect with a new custodial partner letting those people redeem their BAT balances!
