Is this the next job to become obsolete?

By LeftFooted | Cars & tech | 24 Mar 2025

In the olden days, if you wanted to film anything from above, you needed to hire a chopper.

This meant paying a lot of salaries, including for two people whose labour didn't come cheap, i.e., the cameraman and the helicopter pilot.

On top of that, that also meant doing something that was bureaucratically complicated. Not to mention expensive.

These days, you can just hire a drone pilot.

Now, don't get me wrong, they are two things worth pointing out right away.

For starters drone pilots have to be paid and some of them are expensive to hire, and you still need permits.

But there's no getting away from the fact that it's a lot easier and cheaper.

Hollywood still mostly uses actual helicopter and cameraman, but they're also using drones.

Then, you've got productions with a smaller budget they use almost exclusively drones.

And now there's a new thing.

Chinese automaker BYD has just launched a new car with a drone integrated into the roof of the car.

You can apparently deploy the drone and have it film your car as you drive along for some cool aerial shots.

So that's a way to automate a job that we already streamlined and simplified.

Times, they are a-changin'.
