Characteristics:
This cactus grows in a cilindric and semi-erect way, because when it grows its ramifications (which are abundant) it tends to lay, growing then in a creeping way. Each stem can grow up to 20 or so centimeters long. The colonies can reach a diameter of half a meter, if not more. From each mammilla grow radial and center spines, in numbers of 10-20 and 1-4 respectively. One of the central spines grow in a hook form, of a redish brown color. The plant changes its color depending on the light exposure, being of a dark green tone when it grows in shadows and a redish green when it is exposed to large amounts of direct sunlinght (which is also needed for it to produce flowers).
Cares:
It tolerates pretty well direct sunlight and hot temperatures (from a range of 15 to 35°C). Does not tolerate cool weathers (temperatures below 10°C could be lethal for it). Soil must drain fast and be composed of little organic matter. Watering during hot weathers should be moderate and always making sure the soil is dry before watering. During winter it is advisable to not water or to do it only once a month. It can be reproduced quite easily given that the cuttings tend to root quite fast (in a couple of days)
Flowering:
They usually bloom during summer and when the cactus is exposed to direct sunlight. Most of the varieties show a pinkish flower, but it can be of a different tone as there are many sub-varieties of this cactus.
