Face of Penghulu, Indonesian Religious Official in Wedding Ceremony

Penghulu presents at the ceremony to conduct the oath of marriage.

Literally, penghulu means “headman, chief, or director” of tribes, clans, or villages. But in Southeast Asia, including Indonesia, it is used as a title for religious leaders. Penghulu will lead a wedding ceremony.

K. A. Steenbrink wrote “Penghulu”, in Encyclopaedia of Islam, Second Edition, edited by P. Bearman, Th. Bianquis, C.E. Bosworth, E. van Donzel, W.P. Heinrichs (First published online: 2012), explained that: “In older Malay writings it is also used as an honorific title for the prophet Muḥammad, indicating him as “leader of all the prophets” (penghulu para nabi). In more Javanised areas the word indicated the highest religious officials, both at the central courts of the various sultanates and at places...”
