The “D” Parameter

The "D" parameter was a key mechanism in Cardano's transition from a centralized to a decentralized blockchain. Initially, block production was controlled by the network's founders. Starting in July 2020, the "D" parameter gradually reduced this control by 2% every five days, allowing more stake pool operators to participate. By March 31, 2021, the parameter reached zero, signifying full decentralization. The parameter was completely removed in the September 2022 Vasil upgrade, solidifying Cardano's commitment to decentralization.

Blockchain technology is a decentralized, immutable ledger that eliminates intermediaries and enables trustless systems through cryptographic protocols. In governance, blockchain enhances decision-making processes by enabling decentralized, transparent, and automated systems such as Decentralized Autonomous Organizations (DAOs). These structures allow stakeholders to propose, vote, and execute decisions, fostering inclusivity and accountability in managing resources, projects, or communities. Read on!
