Ethereum's Dencun update will be activated in March, more precisely in slot 8626176. The main benefit of the modifications that Dencun includes is the reduction of costs when operating on the main network.
The activation date of the update is March 13, 2024 at 1:55 p.m. (UTC) , as reported by the Nethermind team, developers of software solutions on decentralized websites. Tim Beiko, the person in charge of disseminating the topics discussed at the Ethereum developer meetings, confirmed the data. The unit of measurement "slot" mentioned by the developers refers to "slots", periods of time in which a block is proposed for certification.
Dencun is a highly anticipated upgrade on Ethereum. The expectation is because it will allow the space of each block to be used more efficiently, making transactions lighter and, therefore, cheaper .
For this, the so-called blobs will be used in Ethereum, a concept that refers to an element capable of adapting its shape to make room for itself in the space it has available. In the context of Ethereum, blobs can help fill unused spaces in blocks.
Blobs are also part of a larger reform, Proto-Danksharding, a data organization mechanism that also proposes the temporary storage of off-chain data, that is, off-chain, available to nodes at all times. , but without taking up space. Proto-Danksharding is included in EIP-4844, an improvement proposal contemplated in Dencun.
When it was agreed to arrive on test networks and subsequently on the Etheruem mainnet, the activation of Dencun was projected to occur in 2023. However, development times were extended and the update was delayed.
However, for a couple of months everything has been going according to plan. On January 17, 2024, Dencun was successfully tested on Goerli, an Ethereum testnet. On January 30, he did the same in Sepolia and on February 7 he also "approved" Holesky's evaluation of him.
