Twelve years ago, in a forgotten corner of the digital world, a Bitcoin (BTC) miner turned on his machines and, as a reward for that task, obtained a treasure that at the time seemed more like an experiment than a fortune.
Those were the days when the Bitcoin network was still crawling, and each mined block yielded a generous reward: 25 bitcoins per block, an amount that seems like a dream today. This miner, with a prophet's vision, a patience of steel, or who knows why, decided not to sell.
Instead, he hoarded his bitcoins like someone hiding a relic, hoping time would prove him right. Twelve years later, that's certainly what happened: what was worth $8,750 in 2013 as a Bitcoin mining reward has risen to around $23.25 million today, according to data from the block explorer mempool.space.
A chest sealed for more than a decade
On April 22, the bitcoin developer known by the pseudonym 'mononaut' shared on X a discovery in which he revealed that, on that very day, someone had moved 200 bitcoins worth of mining rewards that had been untouched for 12 years.
In reality, there were ten Coinbase transactions (a reward granted by the network to mining nodes), each involving amounts close to 25 bitcoins that emerged from their dormancy and were transferred to new addresses. In total, this miner had accumulated 250 BTC at a time when mining was more of an act of faith than a business.
From crumbs to millions: Bitcoin's leap
Fast forward to today, and Bitcoin is no longer a curious experiment for a few; it's a headline-grabbing, market-moving giant. On April 22, 2025, when this miner finally decided to move his 250 bitcoins, each one was worth approximately $93,000. As an estimate, if one were to calculate the price of each of those 250 BTC in 2013, it could be established that each of those coins was worth an average of about $35 at that time.
That fortune, once a handful of digital coins, has transformed into a treasure worth more than $23 million. It's as if you'd kept a seed in a jar and, upon opening it, found an entire forest. This miner's patience, his determination not to give in to the temptation to sell during the market's ups and downs, brought him a reward few could imagine. As the world changed, as Bitcoin climbed mountains and fell into abysses, he simply waited, letting time do the hard work.
Those ten transactions, involving amounts ranging from 25 BTC to 25.01 BTC, totaling 250 bitcoins, were each processed at a fee of around 33,200 satoshis, equivalent to nearly $31. A paltry cost for moving a fortune worth millions.
A lesson in the art of waiting
Twelve years ago, this miner couldn't have known that Bitcoin would become the phenomenon it is today. Perhaps he sensed it, or perhaps he simply trusted the promise of a system that doesn't depend on banks, governments, or centralized entities.
Whatever the case, his decision to hold transformed his financial life. From $8,750 to over $23 million, his story is a reminder that, in the world of Bitcoin, time can be your best ally. As the mining machines whirred a decade ago, this miner didn't just mine bitcoins; he mined a future. And today, by moving those coins, he showed us that sometimes the greatest fortunes aren't in what you sell, but in what you choose to keep.
