Japanese company Metaplanet is intensifying its Bitcoin (BTC) accumulation strategy, surpassing the reserves of countries like Bhutan and North Korea.
With the acquisition of 2,205 BTC on July 7, Metaplanet reached a total of 15,555 BTC, leaving behind the 11,924 BTC from Bhutan and the 13,562 BTC attributed to North Korea.
This move cements Metaplanet as the fifth-largest company with Bitcoin holdings globally, behind only companies like Riot Platforms, which holds 19,225 BTC.

According to the firm's CEO, Simon Gerovich, the goal is to lead BTC treasuries in Asia with accelerated accumulation, which he described as a "bitcoin gold rush." The company is seeking "escape velocity" to distance itself from its competitors, as reported by CriptoNoticias.
Additionally, Metaplanet projects to reach 210,000 BTC by the end of 2027, which would represent 1% of the total bitcoin in circulation.
However, the company's plans go beyond accumulation. Gerovich revealed a second phase that involves using Bitcoin reserves as collateral to obtain loans, once banks accept the cryptocurrency as an asset equivalent to securities or government bonds.
With these loans, Metaplanet plans to acquire profitable, cash-rich businesses, including the potential purchase of a digital bank in Japan to offer advanced financial services.
“We will have cash that we can use to buy profitable businesses,” Gerovich said, outlining an ambitious vision for the company’s future.
