Last night after thirteen days of protests Ricardo Rosselló announced he resigned his position as governor of Puerto Rico. After the leak of the telegram chat were Rosselló and his advisers made fun of the suffering in the island, made misogynistic comments, detailed how to steal money and fantasized with killing San Juan's mayor Carmen Yulín Cruz people filled the streets demanding his head on a silver plate. In the almost 900 pages of the chat confidential information were disclosed about federal funds, stealing and defrauding the people. They also called several important woman whore, made fun of the LGTTB community and the drop of water that filled the cup: making fun of the death of almost 5 thousand people after hurricanes Irma and Maria in 2017.
For thirteen days thousands protested resulting in half of his administration resigning their positions. Big companies joined the movement: pepsi, coca cola, M&M, oreo to mention some of them, also bank owners and the most powerful families in the country demanded for Rosselló to resign, after all they were losing millions thanks to the strikes. The secretary of state (yes, Puerto Rico have its own), the secretary of government and several advisers resigned in less than 10 days. The director of the government health plan, the secretary of education among others were arrested by the FBI for corruption. Thousands marched against Rosselló day and night, all kind of different protest were held and the entire planet spread the news about our people's fight against corruption! The house of representatives started an impeachment process last night after a panel of experts made a detail investigation of all the laws Rosselló violated in the chat but the governor at 11:50pm published a video in facebook announcing his resignation.
The entire island was in silence when the video came out and when he said "I resign" screamings of joy filled the entire island! Around Puerto Rico millions were celebrating this moment. The fight of our people changed history, it is the first time a higher up in a government is forced by the people to quit his position. Most people would think "People won, the fight is over" but no. Today, just a few hours after Rosselló resigned people keeps marching against corruption and fighting. The message is clear, puerto ricans won't stop until the government is clean and they will keep pushing until they achieve it.
As a woman and puerto rican I feel proud of my people! We raised our voice and stood still, we kept fighting and we didn't quit. We showed the world that when people unite they can achieve everything, even the most difficult thing! If a little island with just 3 million people made the government tremble in fear and the governor to resign his position imagine what hundreds of millions can achieve if they unite against their oppressive leaders!
For all my brothers and sister around the world that still live under oppressive governments, DON'T GIVE UP! KEEP FIGHTING! UNITE AND SHOW THEM WHO TRULY HAVE THE POWER! THE VICTORY IS YOURS IF YOU UNITE AND FIGHT!. As my people says: "We are more and we're not afraid!"
