After the US President pardoned Ross Ulbricht, a lot of people automatically thought of Sam Bankman-Fried.
But why? Ulbricht was providing a platform where illegal things were being purchased, but every customer and seller on the platform was a willing participant. They did illegal things because they wanted to.
Obviously Ulbricht turned a blind eye to that, which was indeed a crime, and he paid for it. His sentence was, in my view, inevitable but exaggerated and political.
So he did his time, maybe even too much, but now he's out.
But the Bankman-Fried thing is totally different.
Bankman-Fried knew what he was doing all along, he knew he was stealing billions from people who had no idea, and still went ahead and did it.
And he lied about it the whole time.
Bernie Madoff ran what people agree was the largest Ponzi scheme in history, worth $65 billion.
He was put in prison for life and vilified by everybody.
Bankman-Fried did something very similar, using crypto as an instrument, but for some reason some people think he's innocent. But why? Is it because he 'only' lost his investors and clients $32 billion?
Madoff got 150 years.
So at the very least, I expect 70 years for Bankman-Fried.
But no, now this guy is doing podcasts with Tucker Carlson from jail.
And by the way, this guy keeps damning himself. Every time he talks he's all over the place and makes his position worse, and yet people are still willing to give him all the leeway in the world.
By the way, fun fact, Sam Bankman-Fried's crisis PR rep didn't know about his interview with Tucker Carlson, and resigned right after.
Sometimes the world we're living in is truly frustrating.
