On January 12, 2009, exactly 14 years ago, the first Bitcoin transaction took place.

The transaction was broadcasted on the Bitcoin network at 4:01 AM GMT+1 (=dinner time in Los Angeles).

Bitcoin's founder Satoshi Nakamoto sent 10 BTC to Hal Finney, the late American software developer who worked closely with Nakamoto.

The transaction has 771,433 confirmations at the time of writing. Hal Finney's 10 BTC are worth $180,638 at the time of writing.

The block also included another transaction, from Satoshi 2 to Satoshi 3, of 40 BTC.

There have hundreds of theories about the true identity of Satoshi Nakamoto over the years and many have speculated that Hal Finney may be Satoshi.

Finney pioneered research about the double spending problem and P2P transactions in the early 1990s, he died in 2014.
