Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov eventually caved in, and agreed to collaborate with the authorities in the future.
Durov, co-founder of Telegram but also the face of the company, was arrested in Paris a few weeks ago, and his arrest sparked a fierce debate about whether Telegram was doing the right thing or not by preserving the privacy of its users at all costs.
By contrast, French authorities argued that he was arrested because Telegram refused to cooperate with the police regarding Telegram groups that both the authorities and Telegram, this is what the police argues, knew to include, protect or in any way aid criminal activity.
The truth is probably in the middle. Or not. But that's beside the point. The point is Telegram said it will now cooperate with the authorities, by which they mean governments, government agencies and so on.
From now on, Telegram will share relevant information with the authorities, including the identity, ip and so on, of users on the platform in case of ongoing criminal investigations.
It's unclear whether this means authorities will simply have to 'ask', or whether Telegram will only share in case of serious, solid, concrete evidence something is off.
