One of the few remaining useful ways to use FB is with groups.
FB groups can be useful for a variety of things. For example, whenever I know I'm gonna be travelling somewhere I've never been, I join a FB group for locals, for expats, for people from my homeland that live there.
You skip all the travel blog sugarcoating and get straight to the heart of the matter, because people have first-hand experience with the things you might need.
So a while back, I was thinking about getting an Amex card again, and so I joined a group for that.
Since joining, not only have I changed my mind, I'm definitely not gonna get an Amex, but it's clear to me that people in this group are cult followers.
I should point out that I didn't join the international group for that, I joined the one specific to my country so things might be different, but having said that, it's clear to me that Amex is not worth it. At least for me.
They talk about fees like it's normal, something you have to accept. But I haven't paid fees on transactions, including those involving currency exchange, in a while, and I don't see why I should.
They talk about cashback and miles and stuff like that, but I have those things with Curve, and Wirex and Revolut.
They talk about insurance, but again that's something that's available with other providers.
They talk about lounge access, but again that's something I have with Revolut.
And Amex has always been famously not widely accepted everywhere and anywhere and, based on what they're saying, it's getting worse.
Based on the messages I keep reading in that group, Amex is really only still a great deal for extremely high-net worth individuals, but for everyone else, it seems you're paying a lot for not a lot in return.
But they want it to work, and so they stick at it. But it doesn't.
It's a cult.
I used Amex as an example, and I don't know maybe you have it and it works great for you. But the bottom line is, it seems to me people spend way too much time and energy on things they wish worked.
But it's a waste of time.
It's like walking out with sunglasses instead of an umbrella when it's raining just because you desperately want it to be sunny. But if it isn't, you're just gonna get wet.
