The history of the ABBA group

The history of the ABBA group is one of the brightest and most successful stories in the world of pop music. The Swedish quartet, consisting of two married couples, not only conquered the world charts, but also left an indelible mark on culture.

Creation and first success (1970-1974)

The band was formed in 1972 in Stockholm, Sweden. It consists of:

Agnetha Feltskog (vocals)

Björn Ulvaeus (vocals, guitar)

Anni-Frid Lyngstad (or Frida, vocals)

Benny Andersson (vocals, keyboards)

Bjorn and Benny were the authors of the music and lyrics, while Agnetha and Frida were the vocalists. The band's name is an acronym of the first letters of their names. They were originally known as two duets: Bjorn and Agnetha were married, as were Benny and Frida.

Their first breakthrough was winning the Eurovision Song Contest in 1974 with the song "Waterloo". This victory instantly transformed ABBA from local stars to global celebrities.

The Golden Era (1975-1981)

ABBA
After the Eurovision Song Contest, the band began releasing one hit after another. Their music was distinguished by catchy melodies, multi-layered arrangements and the perfect harmony of two female voices. ABBA became the kings of dance pop music of the 70s. Among their most famous hits are:

"Mamma Mia" (1975)

"Dancing Queen" (1976) is one of the most iconic pop songs of all time.

"Knowing Me, Knowing You" (1977)

"Take a Chance on Me" (1977)

"Voulez-Vous" (1979)

"Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight)" (1979)

However, the personal lives of the participants began to disintegrate. Agnetha and Bjorn divorced in 1979, followed by Benny and Frida in 1981. These events were reflected in their work, making the songs more somber and personal. Hits such as "The Winner Takes It All" (1980) and "One of Us" (1981) were filled with sadness and reflections on the breakup of a relationship.

The Breakup and the Long Silence (1982-2016)

The band has never officially announced its breakup, but since 1982 its creative activity has stopped. Their last studio album, The Visitors (1981), became their most serious and dramatic work. The members started solo projects, and Bjorn and Benny continued to write music for musicals, including the famous "Chess".

Despite the lack of new songs, ABBA's popularity did not fade. Their music was constantly played on the radio, and hit collections such as "ABBA Gold" (1992) sold millions of copies. The musical "Mamma Mia!", based on their songs, became a worldwide hit, and then was filmed.

Comeback and album "Voyage" (2018-2021)

ABBA
In 2018, after more than 35 years of hiatus, the members of ABBA announced a reunion. They recorded two new songs. And in 2021, eight more were added to them, making a full-fledged album "Voyage". The album's release became a sensation and topped the charts worldwide.

In support of the album, a unique show "ABBA Voyage" was announced in London, where the band members perform as "abbatars" — digital avatars created using motion capture technology.

The story of ABBA is not just a success story, but a story about how music created with love and talent can overcome time, personal difficulties and remain relevant for several generations.
