Psychology is a science. In every science, a specific subject is systematically studied. A science is a well-organized body of knowledge on any subject. Every science has certain objectives. Just as the main objectives of Physics are to understand how the events and phenomena in the physical world around us occur, similarly the main objectives of Astronomy are to understand the nature and structure of the universe, as well as how this universe came into existence and what events occur in the universe. Similarly, there are four main objectives of psychology related to unraveling the mysteries of human and other animal behavior.
• Description of behavior: The first goal of psychology is to observe or understand what is happening. Observing behavior and recording everything about it is description.
• Explanation of behavior: Psychology explains why people behave the way they do. The main goal of psychology is to explain and analyze all kinds of behavior.
• Prediction of behavior: Once the reasons for behavior are understood, and the cause-effect relationship is established, it becomes easier to predict behavior. It is possible to predict with a high degree of certainty what kind of behavior a person will have at any given time and in any given situation.
• Behavioral control: By understanding the causes of behavior and being able to predict it, it becomes possible to control the behavior of other people.
Ultimately, psychology is an integral part of human life. Therefore, the application of the basic principles of psychology to solve various problems in human life is an important objective of psychology.
